On the November 6th, 2023 edition of Notre Dame Federal Credit Union's Irish Football, host Angelo Di Carlo chats with College Football Hall of Famer and one of the greatest wide receivers in Notre Dame history, Thom Gatewood about faith, family and football.
Gatewood was an All American in 1970, setting the Notre Dame record for receptions in a season and a career that stood for 36 years.
His story is fascinating. He already had 150 college offers before his parents even realized he was playing football. A good student, football provided the 'fund' to get Gatewood to college. Gatewood became emotional as he recalled the phone call from Ara Parseghian to offer him a scholarship to Notre Dame.
He was also the first black captain at Notre Dame and Fr. Ted Hesburgh referred to him as the Jackie Robinson of Notre Dame football. He helped pave the way for future black athletes at Notre Dame.
