Welcome to the Folk(e)s Unfettered Show's Memorial Day special Episode honoring the fallen and their families. Today, we remember the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces and died in combat. We honor their sacrifice and pay tribute to their service.

A Brief History of Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering and honoring those who have died while serving in the U.S. military. It is observed on the last Monday of May, which is also the unofficial start of the summer holiday season.

The holiday was originally called "Decoration Day" and was first observed on May 30, 1868, at Arlington National Cemetery. The purpose of Decoration Day was to decorate the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers who had died in the Civil War.

In 1971, Memorial Day was changed to its current name. The holiday is now a time to remember all those who have died while serving in the U.S. military, regardless of when they died or what war they fought in.

How to Honor Memorial Day

There are many ways to honor Memorial Day. Here are a few ideas:

• Visit a cemetery and decorate the graves of fallen soldiers.
• Attend a Memorial Day ceremony.
• Fly the American flag.
• Donate to a veterans' organization.
• Write a letter to a deployed service member.
• Simply take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices that have been made for our country.
• Be a good American!

No matter how you choose to honor Memorial Day, please take a moment to remember those who have given their lives for our freedom.
