Why does sustainable fishing matter today? Peak fish supply occurred in the 1990s but since then we’ve seen a decline in supply. But what’s causing this decline? Over-fishing. Demand for fish continues to increase despite a shrinking supply. So the idea that there are plenty of fish in the sea…well, that’s really not true. In this episode, we’ll take a look at the oceans and into the work of Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Vibrant Oceans Initiative and why with our partners we are working to encourage responsible fishing globally to protect this vital source of food and income for generations to come.
Stroke, blindness, gum infection, heart disease, and of course cancer. These are only some of the harmful health effects of tobacco use. And despite a half-century of scientific proof that smoking is dangerous to our bodies, and anti-tobacco policies protecting billions of people, we still have a long way to go in the fight against tobacco. In part 1 of a 2-part series, we go in depth on tobacco control and how Bloomberg Philanthropies is working with partners around the world to protect billions of people from the harmful effects of tobacco.
Meet Abdoulaye Toure, the Country Director for Women for Women International – who as the organization’s second male country director in Congo - shares some personal stories of impact he’s seen in the role of women in Congo, and why he’s committed his life to demonstrating the value of women in a country where they have struggled to have a voice. Think about what you know about Congo today, and by the end of the episode, we think you’ll have a better sense of the impact of the work and impact of the work.
Thousands of high-achieving, low- and moderate-income high school students graduate each year with strong academic credentials but they lack critical guidance to apply to, enroll in and graduate from top-performing colleges and universities. To improve these odds, Bloomberg Philanthropies developed the CollegePoint initiative which matches select students with virtual advisors. In this episode we interview one of the advisors and a student who have been working together to achieve her college dreams.
In the fourth episode of Follow the Data, we hear from partners of Bloomberg Philanthropies' Women’s Economic Development program to understand how they are working to create economic opportunities for women in growing industries.
Verna Eggleston from our Women’s Economic Development team is joined by Christine Condo of Sustainable Harvest Rwanda as they discuss how our partnership is training women farmers in post-conflict Rwanda to produce and deliver high-quality coffee to buyers around the globe, while acquiring a clear path to being economically self-sufficient.
Hear from partners of our Data for Health Initiative, which aims to help over one billion people in developing countries to live healthier and longer lives by establishing reliable health data to inform health programs and policy.
In the second episode of Follow the Data – a podcast about how our work is driving change and making an impact in the areas of education, the arts, the environment, public health and government innovation – we take a deeper dive into the work of Bloomberg Connects partner the Brooklyn Museum to see how they are transforming the visitor experience through technology.
To tell us more about how the Museum puts “People” first when it comes to creating a meaningful digital experience, Kate Levin, who oversees the arts program at Bloomberg Philanthropies and Shelley Bernstein, the former Vice Director of Digital Engagement & Technology at the Brooklyn Museum join us for this new episode.
In our first episode, we join a conversation between Bloomberg Philanthropies' environment program lead Antha Williams and the Sierra Club's Beyond Coal director Mary Anne Hitt as they discuss how our work with the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal campaign is working to end America’s reliance on coal and shifting the U.S. power sector to a cleaner future.
