Sometimes God lets us run with our ingratitude, selfishness and shortsightedness because — sometimes! — we have to learn the hard way. And eventually we bottom out. But how do we get out of the mess we’ve created for ourselves? Spoiler alert: genuine repentance.

That’s question a high school friend sarcastically asked the teenaged me after I returned from a youth group Bible study about repentance.

“While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and his heart was stirred with love and pity.”

Are you thinking twice about your life? Past decisions you now regret? Trapped in your present circumstances? Concerned about your future? There is a way to get back on track.

When we come to our senses that we’ve been going the wrong way, a good question to ask is “what must I do?” An even better response is “here’s what I did/going to do to make it right!”
