We live in a world characterized by suffering and by brokenness in our relationships with self, others, God, and creation. The narrative of scripture culminates with God setting everything right and inviting his people to dwell in a perfect City of Peace. This promise offers us hope amid today's struggles. But, as citizens of God's kingdom, we also are called to live out the "culture of heaven" in the here-and-now.

What is God doing in difficult times, and what does he ask of us? Near the beginning of the book of Revelation, Jesus speaks extensively to his church. In his words we hear reassurance, challenge, and a loving invitation to humbly return to relationship with him.

As followers of Jesus, we carry a hope that is deeper and longer lasting than any of the difficulties we run into in this world. But will we share it? In his letter to the Romans, Paul encourages his listeners to receive and to share the good news, reminding each of us that a person needs to hear the gospel before they can respond to it.

In uncertain and anxious times, what does it mean to be a follower of Jesus? The story of Jesus calming the storm reminds us of the power of the word of God to produce stability that goes deeper than our circumstances. Jesus’ invitation towards faith in the storm invites us into a fresh opportunity to experience Jesus’ power and grow in maturity.

What happens when the grace of God pours out on a community? In the earliest days of the Christian church, we get a picture of the powerful work of the Holy Spirit who draws us together in unity, inspires us together towards generosity and empowers us together for mission.

As humans we make judgments based on what we can see, but so often we get it wrong. While watching the rich and poor give their offerings at the temple, Jesus exposes the inner motives behind outward actions and reveals that generosity is measured not by what is given, but by what is kept back. And, in this framework, a poor widow emerges as the hero of the story.

Jesus investigates the heart of a wealthy young man and discovers that, despite this man’s religious rigour, he loves money more than God. Through this interaction, Jesus invites each of us to consider the allegiances that are most foundational in our lives, and, if we’re willing, to surrender these things in exchange for a much greater reward.

As humans, we seem to have innate tendencies to jockey for position and compete for promotion. Jesus calls out these impulses of the human heart and challenges us to do precisely the opposite! Kingdom living involves being willing to humble ourselves and to prioritize including those who won't help us get ahead--those whom society doesn't celebrate.
