When your allergist recommends a food challenge, what goes through your mind?
"Is it safe?" "What if my kiddo has a reaction?" And back to, "Is it safe?"

So what really is a food challenge, and is it safe?

A food challenge is a procedure performed in an allergist's office that involves your kiddo ingesting increasing amounts of the potential allergen to determine:
Has an allergy has resolved? Is an allergy is present?

Eating away from home is one of the most stressful situations food allergy families can experience.  No matter how much you trust the restaurant and how fantastic its people are, the worry of allergen accidentally getting into your kiddo's food is always there to some degree.

And how much of that allergen would cause an allergic reaction? A microgram? A milligram? 

In this episode, I go through the super interesting article "Risk of shared equipment in restaurants for consumers with peanut allergy: a simulation for preparing Asian foods" from the peer-reviewed journal Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, the journal of the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.

Relevant here is immunotherapy, such as oral immunotherapy (OIT). Immunotherapy can make kiddos with food allergy more tolerant of the allergen. This means a kiddo would be less likely to have an allergic reaction when ingesting allergen.

But does that tolerance translate into real world benefits, like improving safety while eating at a restaurant? Tune in to this episode to hear what this article's researchers found!

Recommendations for when to feed babies certain foods have changed over the years. You may have had one set of recommendations for one child, then with another child, you had different recommendations! So when should babies first have foods like scrambled eggs and peanut butter? 

We know that early introduction of potentially allergenic foods can certainly help prevent allergy in some children. But how does that actually translate out into practice? How does that directly affect families?

Have you ever ordered something online and have been so excited about your purchase, that it will help you with whatever ails you, only to be disappointed? Many families who are dealing with food allergy or intolerance have ordered or considered ordering online allergy testing, but are disappointed with the results.
Spoiler alert: testing for food allergy can be complicated, and rarely (if ever!) can it be diagnosed by an online test. In fact, skin and blood testing are not the gold standard for food allergy.

Parenting is hard enough. Throw food allergy into that mix, and you may feel like you're Mario and have tunneled through the warp zone to a whole other level of difficulty. But it doesn't have to be that way. You can triumph over that Bowser that is food allergy!
