In the 2013 preliminary final it was a clash of the titans as the Hawthorn Hawks took on the Geelong Cats. The Cats had defeated the Hawks 11 straight times following the Hawks upset win in the 2008 Grand Final. As the Cats winning streak grew it was labelled the “Kennett Curse”, as after the 2008 Grand Final Jeff Kennett (former Victorian Premier & Hawks president) had come out and said that Geelong lacked the mental fortitude to get it done against Hawthorn, when it really mattered. The Cats of course took exception to this and vowed to never lose to the Hawks again. Now the Kennett Curse would be put to the ultimate test as the Hawks looked to cement their place in history with another premiership cup (but first they’d have to get to the Grand Final).
