I got to sit down with Nick to explore his incredible journey into acting. We also happen to be cousins, so naturally, we get DEEP!

Red Bull Amaphiko Academy is an 8 day course for grassroots social entrepreneurs in the UK who are making a positive difference in their community. The Academy aims to give them the inspiration, mentorship and practical skills and tools they need to take themselves and their projects to the next level.

There were 15 social entrepreneurs taking part in the academy, and I was lucky enough to feature a couple of them on my show to discuss their projects and purpose.

In todays episode I sit down with James Marshall founder of 10T which creates cool clothes from old tents left at festivals.

The project tries to address the wasted textile problem throughout different industries in the UK by developing these wasted materials into streetwear. 10T’s first project this year we are collecting tents left at music festivals and developing these into jackets, bum bags and bucket hats. It was estimated that 250,000 tents were left at music festivals in 2018 alone and 90% of this material goes to landfill and incinerator. This material can still be used and the majority of the tents left have only be used for the festival and the material is of good quality. James studied a Masters degree in Environmental Sustainability and saw the figures for textile waste in the UK. he has also been involved in fashion his whole life. He worked in fashion retail for 5 years and he was a model for Established London for a year so he always had a love fashion and he knew he was interested in the industry. This is why he came up with the concept of 10T, to combine his knowledge on waste management and create a clothing company.

Today I sit down with Alvin Owusu, founder of The Advantage group which is changing the future of young people from underrepresented backgrounds

Alvin grew up in Hackney (‘disadvantaged’ borough), in a single parent and low income household. The triple threat. However, everything Alvin lacked monetarily, he made up for in drive and raw ambition.. The Advantage Group aims to break barriers and transform the Narrative of young people. They provide a number of fun and impactful workshops tailored to the needs of specific groups of young people. This has been done through their 3 day annual academy, their school tour and their year long development programme. They also work closely with small to large organisations to help create pipelines and access for these young people, this helps provide opportunities for young people. In doing this, they have addressed the problem at a very early stage (ages 15-19). They will begin creating a online school planner to distribute to schools which incorporates their sessions. Often planting a seed that will inevitably be watered as they progress through later education/training. We have also addressed the systemic issues that result in the employability issues faced by these groups.
