Welcome to For The Health Of It Podcast. A Healthcare Australia podcast, made for Healthcare professionals by a nurse on the inside. Your host today is Jess Tully, the HCA Brand Ambassador, and she had the privilege to interview Dr Ben Bravery and not only dive into the story of his book ‘The Patient Doctor' but into his personal story of his stage 3 colorectal cancer diagnosis.
From a life in Beijing with a degree in zoology, to a stage 3 colorectal cancer diagnosis at the age of 28, its safe to say Ben’s life dramatically changed. His book, The Patient Doctor, talks about his own journey and experience as a ‘patient’ in the medical world and chats about the good, the bad and the ugly.
We dive into the gaps of healthcare, and the major gap is ‘communication’. That basic human to human interaction, empathy and treating patients as a ‘human being’. It seems basic, but its lacking in a dramatic way.
We also cover the nursing side of Ben’s medical journey and gave us some amazing intel on what nurses did to help (and not help) with his recovery. Ben ended up going to university and studying to be a doctor himself to make a change and this is only the beginning for him. His book is being rolled out to student doctors to help develop the understand that communication is ‘key’; in the medical world.
Its not going to change overnight, but this is a huge step in the right direction and for that, THANK YOU BEN! Thank you for starting that movement!
