It’s ok to not have the same goal as 2024
It’s a new year, you have a year worth of perspective & life experience now affecting & influencing your perspective & ability for the next year
What goals are you defining for 2025?
Don’t think of 2024 goals and/or resolutions as a fail but think of the goal having been a starting point in a continuous goal, having the belief you'll be able to accomplish the goal in 2025
Do you feel confident?
Speaking in the context of fitness, as the new year approaches, the majority of people typically have intentions toward improving their fitness and make what’s usually known as “resolutions.” Usually, resolutions “fail” because people don’t have a healthier perspective of “failure” in fitness goals. Depending on the goal & life situation, you fail if you stop but having a healthier perspective encourages you to continue despite all of what’s part of the process.
For many, lapses in life are inevitable. Having the perspective of not failing 2024 goals but rather a part of what’s now 2025’s goals allows you to view the in-between of 2024 and 2025 as just a lapse. A lapse is just a temporary misstep or departure from plans, a temporary problem. The in-between lapse of who you’ve been and who your goals are making you into- the habits, disciplines, behaviors, actions, your lifestyle & holistic well-being- is just a lapse to think through & make necessary implementations. The lapse isn’t a relapse, isn’t a failure. A relapse is a complete change back into old problematic patterns of behavior- the old self, the old habits, behaviors & lack of discipline. You listening to the episode means you’re further along in managing a lapse than relapsing.
You didn’t fail 2024 goals & you don’t have to give up on your goals.
You just have to decide for yourself what goals are worth your year- every aspect since fitness is holistic & lifestyle adjustments aren’t easy & demands a long-term perspective. & not just perspective but the effort each day to keep progressing toward accomplishing.
What’s it worth?
A helpful 5-step road map to help people through lapses & prevent lapses becoming relapses is
- Accept
- Replay
- Replay with corrective action
- Self-monitor
- Move on
Once you accept & move on & are ready for 2025 goals you can approach your new goals in a new perspective with more willingness & excitement rather than letting 2024 hold you back, weigh you down & give a separation of what didn’t happen toward the accomplishment of goals & what is able to happen through the necessary & specific steps
Evaluate your goal
Adjust goal if necessary
Focus on a specific goal, don’t set more goals than you’re realistically capable of accomplishing
Acknowledge where you’re at in the stages of change model- don't compare stages with people around and/or are encouraged through- each person has their "process"
Be public about your goals
Take responsibility & seek helpful accountability
Reevaluate
Commit to making 2025 goals different than 2024. Doesn’t necessarily mean making different goals but having a different perspective, different approach, different mindset, different willingness, different method & different effort. It’s not as helpful expecting a new goal to be accomplished how 2024 goals weren’t accomplished. Efforts & intentions have to be evaluated then realigned.
Hope next year is the year of accomplishment, not giving up & a year of growth in your holistic health, wellness & fitness.
