Dear Liz, I feel as though I can’t get a break in my job search. I apply for jobs and I’ve had quite a few interviews. Sometimes I get to a first interview and I don’t get a second one (nor do I get any followup). I have pitched a lot applications into the void. I have two HR Managers who have told me that I’m on their short list for the next job opening that gets approved.

Big data is sexy.  Data scientists are the unicorns of the job market right now. Some days, it feels as though we are living right on the edge of some science fiction utopian future. But unicorns and sci-fi aside, for businesses, implementing something like a big data strategy has to be more than sexy: it has to be practical. Indeed, with losses of $290 million in 2014 and $888 million in 2015, it’s unclear when the company will eventually hit profitability. Critics also point to the fact that cofounder and visionary CEO Elon Musk often oversells what the company can do in the short run.

Shutterstock Hit a slump? Join the club. The majority of American employees suffer from low productivity, lack of opportunity to pursue creative solutions, or a poor attitude. But, it hasn’t always been this bad. Today, we have lower stats for workplace productivity than we have had in the last 35 years. And certain days of the week are especially rotten: Employees produce 10% less work on Monday and 24% less on Friday than they do on the most productive day of the week: Wednesday.

Shutterstock Suppose a colleague gives you a compliment as you meet her in the hallway and then another person accidentally bumped you in passing. You will respond more quickly and strongly to being bumped than to being complimented, even if the person who knocked into you immediately apologizes. You have little power over those instinctual reactions. In fact, your mood will be altered longer from a bump than a compliment and you will remember it longer.

PHASE 2: My inner critic appears with a series of thoughts that go something like this: “If I say no, they’ll never hire me again; they won’t like me; they’ll tell other people I’m awful,” and on and on and on.
