They seem to think that the act of marketing and growing their company is separate from their responsibilities of running the organization. Whenever I’ve seen this happen, the company and the campaign has failed.

Who hasn’t struggled to stay awake through a three-hour meeting, or left a department-wide pow-wow wondering what the point was? It’s amazing how many bad meetings we have to suffer through at work: Each month, people spend about 31 hours in unproductive meetings, and the U.S. spends a whopping $37 billion on salaries for hours spent in unnecessary meetings. As someone running four growing companies, I have long understood that time is my most valuable asset.

One day at our team meeting I said “I want to apologize to you guys for changing the staff meeting time after it was all set, but they’re painting both of the big conference rooms during the time we wanted to meet and there are no other rooms that will accommodate all of us, so we have to change the meeting time.

Shutterstock An easy way to tell that your job interviewer does not view you as an equal is to take every question they ask you and spin it around in your head. Imagine how your interviewer would react if you asked them the same question they just asked you, like this: Interviewer: So, what’s your greatest weakness? You: I watch too much TV. What’s yours? Interviewer (affronted): I’m asking the questions.

Fotolia.com Your mind is very powerful. Yet, if you’re like most people, you probably spend very little time reflecting on the way you think. After all, who thinks about thinking? But, the way you think about yourself turns into your reality. If you draw inaccurate conclusions about who you are and what you’re capable of doing, you’ll limit your potential. The role of the startup CEO, however, is different from anything I’ve ever seen. When you’re leading a young company, you must live a life of balance. Strategy must be balanced with operations, and leadership must be balanced with a willingness to listen.
