What is a sought-after job-seeker? A sought-after job seeker is someone who doesn’t stay on the job market for long. A sought-after job seeker is someone who gets a job easily when he or she needs one. Sought-after job seekers get scooped up because at every stage of their job search, they’re communicating. They communicate their value to employers in their LinkedIn profile.

There is a huge industry devoted to a made-up topic called “Employee Motivation.” The idea of hiring a consultant to motivate your employees is ludicrous. There are no team-building exercises, backwoods adventures or contrived HR outings that will motivate a team if the team members don’t trust you and other another. Trust is the topic we don’t talk about enough at work.

It’s a great question—and a frustrating situation. You know you have the transferable skills, the drive and the ambition to do the new job you’re seeking, but it’s hard to compete with others who’ve done exactly what’s required in the position’s description for years.

Shutterstock Two recent events motivated me to write this blog. Event 1: I attended a conference where a presentation speaker was talking about how millennials are so different. The speaker was going through the typical list of characteristics we’ve heard hundreds of times when a millennial raised his hand, stood up and said, “I am so tired of hearing this garbage about millennials and none of it is true!” He received an ovation of support from the audience.

As a marketer you may think you don’t need to go to conferences because you have already established your brand. However, you may want to slow down for one moment, and take today to deeply review the idea of the consequences that follow those who attend events, trade shows, and especially conferences. We would like you to consider that you should be attending conferences to elevate your brand.

It’s a much-anticipated occasion, which is perhaps best highlighted by the number of rumored schedule leaks (and the flood of accompanying headlines) that have hit the internet in recent weeks.

The answer is, it depends. But the question will matter more and more, so it’s worth some thought. The question was prompted by a recent conversation with a company which has developed a system to analyse a candidate’s resume and predict whether they would do well in a job. Their key selling point is that the algorithm only needs to look at the resume; it doesn’t need any other information. Apparently, it works. My first thought was “ick”.
