Dear Liz, I firmly believe in hiring the best people I can find. My dad used to say that “A” managers hire “A” employees, while “B” managers hire “C” employees. In my working life, I have found this to be true. I have hired several very bright and talented young people who have gone on to have tremendous careers. Dear Liz, What’s the best way to tell a job applicant, “No thanks”? I’ve just started a new job as the Recruiting Manager in a 300-person firm. Right now they aren’t doing anything to tell job-seekers when they aren’t going to be hired. The applicant just has to assume they didn’t get the job when they don’t hear from us for weeks after a job interview.

Here are ten tips for overcoming that daunting task you’ve been avoiding, based on science:​ ​ 1. Pick Your Poison. The key to beating procrastination is focus. We often give ourselves too many things to do and become overwhelmed. Start by choosing just ONE thing that you’ve been procrastinating and make a commitment to complete that task in the next week. 2. Start today. Once you’ve narrowed it down to one task, you must take immediate action. Today.

What does it mean to have an extraordinary career? I see a lot of people getting it wrong. Some are too hung up on the technical aspects of career. In all my studies, the people who have great careers, it’s not because of technical aptitude. It’s entirely possible to have great skills and still be unfulfilled or even miserable. Working long hours is also not the single best predictor of career success.

I was raised by wolves in HR. I never had a boss who was an HR person. All my bosses were business people who told me, “Do whatever a good HR  person does.” I focused on the people and the culture. What else would help a company thrive and grow? We didn’t have problems with our employees or get hauled into court. I spent most of each day talking with people and helping them sort out problems.
