If you could choose any company to work for, what would top your list? These days, the majority of millennials want to work at web and tech companies, according to index rankings recently released by YouGov. Google, well known as a benefit and perk palace, comes in at number one with the highest score. Well known web companies Amazon.com and Netflix come second and third respectively.

Four months after graduating college among the top of my class, I failed. I moved to Vancouver to be with my boyfriend and travel somewhere. I tried to be Lululemon’s Senior Director of Marketing, but somehow that didn’t work out. So I wound up a legal secretary—a job that was, for me, unfulfilling and unrelated to my passions. It got worse. I scrambled to sidestep my situation and applied to several top tier PhD programs. I didn’t get in to any. I’d been so promising.

I have been an HR person since 1984. It took me ages to figure out that the employment laws are massively stacked in favor of employers. I guess because I grew up hearing about how wonderful it was that unions won American workers the 40-hour work week (and indeed that was a wonderful thing) and because I saw during my time in HR that now and then new employment laws protected employees a little more every few years, I didn’t see the big picture right away.

I’m a frequent traveler, but more often than not that means hustling from one major airport to the next. My longest travel time usually clocks in at less than five hours. Recently, however, decided to shake things up and make the 14-hour drive from Denver to Phoenix. Point the finger at whomever you choose—a generation, a cultural divide, or even a current mindset. It’s true. A recent report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows worker productivity is falling. And, many leaders are confused about what to do about it. A recent conversation we had with a senior manager who expressed confusion, exposed a perfect example. The manager told us about one of her employees.

About a year after I starting working in the PR department of a big media company in my mid-20s, my immediate supervisor left for another opportunity, and I was promoted to her position. Though I had managed people before, this was my first time at a large corporation where I had several staffers reporting to me, and also had to “manage up”with a number of senior executives, some of whom were pretty intimidating.

When I was 18 I worked for a restaurant chain in New York called Brew ‘N Burger. First I was a hostess, and then somebody told me “You’ll make a lot more money waiting tables” and I grabbed the first chance I saw to become  a waitress, instead. It was a great job for an eighteen-year-old music student.
