Being entrepreneur is not an easy job.  Managing the product, the team and everything around it takes not only a lot of time but also creativity. Thanks to technology and the smartphones – these days there is pretty much the app for anything you need. But to navigate trough millions of applications in App Store or Google Play you need some guidance.

“Your GoodReads account is like my aspirational reading.” For a minute, I was flattered, thinking my friend was gushing at my discerning tastes and brilliant literary selections. “How do you read so much?!” Ah, yes, the ever popular quantity over quality quandary. As recent American political discussions have shown, bragging about the size of something often evokes a more popular rapture and interest than the quality of what is at hand.

There is a dangerous and destructive idea fomenting in American society today, and it permeates almost every aspect of modern life. From politics to business, our society is increasingly mistaking aggression for strength, and bullying for leadership. One need only look at the nature of Donald Trump’s bombastic, aggressive, and wildly popular Presidential campaign for proof of this disturbing trend. In times of difficulty, the allure of bully is seductive yet ultimately disappointing.

It’s a pattern with which most full-time professionals are familiar–you’re spending increasing amounts of time at your desk, but it feels like you’re getting less done. The hours stretch on, the to-do list grows, and you find yourself facing a future where you might let go of your apartment and just start keeping a toothbrush and slippers in your desk. Otherwise you’ll never get it all done—right? It’s an understandable assumption.

It was the coldest day of a very cold winter. Mid-January. Gray skies. Too cold for snow, but a bitter cold wind whipping in from the West. About 2 in the afternoon and the day had “warmed” to about 10 below here at 7,000 feet in northwest Colorado. I was walking down a snow-packed road with my dogs. Every few steps the dogs would stop, lift a front paw and shake it: too cold for them to be out there, I should have known it would be.

It is very important to remember that not every job-seeker has a “recruiter-friendly” resume. If your background is quirky or you’ve made a few career changes, you might not find many headhunters who will work with you. We can’t blame them for that. Recruiters are engaged by their employer clients to find candidates the employers couldn’t find on their own. If you have an unusual career history, that doesn’t mean you aren’t an amazing job candidate.

I’m assuming you’ve read a lot of the great resume advice that exists out there (especially right here on The Muse). But, because of my previous experience as a recruiter, I can tell you that a lot of people aren’t reading any of the tips out there. Or, if they are, they’re ignoring them. And not because they are trying to sabotage themselves, but because they believe themselves to be the exception to the rule. All of those tips and tricks are for other people.
