Networking can be a powerful way of generating new business. Armed with a well-planned strategy, entrepreneurs and business owners, descend on networking events, working the room with clear business goals and high expectations of achieving them. But one entrepreneur is disrupting networking convention, turning the model of anticipated outcomes on its head, and encouraging people from all walks of business life, to network without any preconceived expectations of doing a deal.

Before everything was available on a smartphone, it made sense that aggregating lots of products in one place would be a unique offering. With the way things are sold now, what should department stores do to compete? Think small. In the past, retailers talked about ever-increasing store sizes and broader arrays of products.

When I’m looking for a few minutes of distraction at work, everyone around me seems positively buried in work—no time to discuss the nuances of The Night Of, no patience to chat about where to find the city’s best Mexican food or whether to buy the new iPhone even though it doesn’t have a headphone jack and I don’t actually need a new phone.

Over the past decade or so, more and more hedge fund managers have joined the ranks of the richest Americans. But in 2016, the number of hedge fund managers on the Forbes 400 list shrunk by more than 10%. Twenty-eight members of 2016’s Forbes 400 derived their fortunes primarily by operating hedge funds, representing 7% of the richest Americans, down from 32 hedge fund managers a year ago.

Four years ago today, I attended my first Toastmasters group. A year prior to that, I was diagnosed with social anxiety disorder. Given that as a lawyer, I get paid to talk for a living, struggling with overwhelming anxiety each time I had to speak felt like a huge personal failure. Since that first Toastmasters meeting, I have given over 100 talks to audiences ranging in size from 10 to over 700.

It’s very exciting and affirming when an employer is interested in you. In all that excitement, a job-seeker can easily miss signals that they’re wasting their time. Sadly, there are a lot of ways to waste your precious time as a job-seeker. You can waste time with organizations that will keep you interviewing for months and never make an offer. You can waste your time taking tests and writing essays and never even getting to have a live conversation with a human being.
