Under the rubric Foreign Languages we present a range of international songs that were global hits with languages other than English. Italian: Grammy winning Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu (Volare) by Domenico Modugno, Ti Amo (I Love You) by Umberto Tozzi and Quando, Quando, Quando (When, When, When) by Tony Renis. German: Neun und Neunzig Luft Ballons (99 Air Balloons) by Nena and Viennese Lolita’s Seeman Deine Heimat ist das Meer (Sailor Your Home is the Sea). French: Cést Pane Pour Moi (best translated as everything’s going well for me) by Plastic Bertrand, Charles Aznavour’s She and the French Belgian Dominque by the Singing Nun. Spanish: La Bamba (the name of a dance) by Ritchie Valens and Grammy winner Cuban Celia Cruz singing Guantanamera (from Guantanamo). Japanese is represented with Kyu Sakamoto’s Sukiyaki (a Japanese food dish) and Sergio Mendez & Brasil’66 sing about Mas Que Nada (colloquially to disagree with someone) in their native Portuguese.
