Forecasters Kurt Korte and Rob Mitstifer discuss a morning of surf and the impacts of a strong storm in the Northwest Atlantic that will send waves to the East Coast and Caribbean for the next several days. That isn't the only storm we are watching as a frontal system moving through the Great Lakes will impact the East Coast and set up a significant southerly swell for the end of April and into the beginning of May.
Surfline Lead Forecaster Schaler Perry is joined by Keaton Browning at the top of the pod to discuss the latest impacts of Covid-19 on surfing, beaches reopening, and the return of some of our forecast products. Following that, the boys chat about an early start to the eastern Pacific tropical season and the surf outlook for California during the next week, including the red tide and bioluminescent nightly light show of late in SoCal. Finally, Schaler's fellow lead forecaster Jonathan Warren stops by to delve into the North Shore's all-time April and the expected surf over the next week for the Hawaiian Islands
Surfline Lead Forecaster Kurt Korte is joined by fellow Lead Forecaster Mike Watson to discuss one of the most memorable storms and swells to impact the East Coast in recent memory - Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. The guys start by discussing their recollections of Sandy, especially the impacts on New Jersey and New York. Kurt and Mike then delve into the track and intensity of the storm, along with the uncertainty of the eventual track when the system was still down in the Caribbean. A little later in the pod the guys discuss the swell that impacted Florida and what zones got good and why.
Surfline Director of Forecasting Kevin Wallis is joined by Lead Forecasters Schaler Perry and Jonathan Warren to discuss one of the all-time classic swells in Southern California - Hurricane Marie in August 2014. The guys start by reviewing the surf observations from the day - including some rare bird spots that lit up - then roll into the Surfline Perfect Storm test, the difficulty in predicting tropical surf and find a few ways to talk trash to each other.
Surfline Director of Forecasting Kevin Wallis is joined by Senior Forecaster Chris Borg to discuss the history of Surfline. Chris dives into the early days of phone reports and forecasts, the Wavefax and surf reports by helicopter. And to top it all off, Chris and Kevin discuss how the porn industry helped shape the Surfline business mode - don't worry, it's a PG-rated conversation.
Surfline Lead Forecasters Kurt Korte and Mike Watson tackle a variety of topics related to the tropics. Tropical Cyclone Harold kicks things off but they quickly get into the impacts of El Niño and La Niña on tropical development in the Atlantic and Eastern Pacific. Next up, the guys discuss Colorado State University's early seasonal prediction of Atlantic tropical activity that dropped last week. They follow that with some memorable hurricanes from the past from their perspectives as both surfers and forecasters. The pod wraps up with a few things that the forecast team are working on related to the tropics that will be dropping on Surfline in the coming weeks.
Surfline's Director of Forecasting Kevin Wallis is joined by Lead Forecaster Schaler Perry to first discuss the #ShredAtHome campaign, what they miss about surfing and quick digressions into the recent mayhem at Malibu, the fleeting magic of spring surf in Orange County and surfer's ear. Next up, the guys examine the current California weather pattern and how long rain and mountain snow is expected before looking south as a major tropical cyclone nears Fiji. The pod closes with a sneak peek at the upcoming stories that will help you become a better forecaster.
