  • FTN Episode 374 – What Happens When World’s Collide? MTG and 40k? YES!!

Exciting news from Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop this week with the announcement of Warhammer 40k IP is coming to the Magic the Gathering format.  Wow.  I guess I always wanted this and never knew it.  I’m prepared to tippity tap my way to your face – and ears on this podcast.

    Hey folks,

It is pretty strange when two giants of intellectual property and fandoms come together like this.  I wasn’t sure how I felt at first.  The purist in me clutched my pearls, as it were, but the more I thought about the more I was interested.

The idea of having a complete 40k based Magic experience seems pretty cool to me.  I plan to buy it and I hope it’s supported in a way that gives it some life in the form of being able to break this out every now and then to play with my friends or kids for years to come.

I don’t mind saying that I hope it keeps the same land/color mechanic so I can use 40k lands in my Magic decks.  I don’t play very frequently at all but when I do… I’d like to tap the Emperor’s Palace to cast Ravages of War.

We ooh and ahh over the Cursed City figures a bit more later in the show.

After that we go into full speculation mode about the Drukari and what we hope they bring to the table.  Adam goes deep in the tank theory crafting what a glass cannon in 9th will look like.  Red is a long time DE player and has some thoughts as well.

For anyone who has read this far down we’ve recorded the first video with myself and Oscar Lars where we review a listener submitted model. It should be produced and ready to go mid November. Please keep checking back and if you have a model you’d like us to review for how it would stack up vs the Battle Ready standard and the Artists Standard, hit us up in a private message with a pic. This is coming soon- I promise!

  • FTN Episode 373 – Dan Abnett – What Does It Mean To Write War?

Dan Abnett joins us this episode for an wonderful segment on how war has influenced writing and culture since we’ve had the finer skills of capturing it. He is absolutely amazing and you don’t want to miss this show if you are fan literature.  Thanks so much for coming on, Dan!

    Hey all,

Mr. Abnett takes off like a rocket and we get to hear his thoughts on how war has influenced literature through the modern era. I don’t want to give away any spoilers on what he has to say but I think your ears are in for a treat.

Dan has such a wealth of knowledge on the subject and is a true master of his craft.  We try our best to ask questions we think will lure some of that knowledge out of his but in truth Dan needs no help. We are blessed with his ability to share thoughts and it’s so cool that it comes out on the podcast as well.

I think this is wonderful conversation and I hope it inspires readers to look a little deeper into the Black Library novels – or novels in general – if they weren’t already.  We love Dan’s style but this sort of meaty and tangible sense of scale is something that is present in so many of the BL books.

We don’t discuss any of his current works specifically so go into it know that – to the best of my knowledge this is completely spoiler free.

I sincerely thank Dan for his time and can’t wait to catch up with him again in the future.   In the back half of the show we keep the lore train rolling with a bit of good spirited satire.

  • FTN Episode 372 – The Dark Angels Rock – See What I Did There?

We’re getting into the nitty gritty with the Dark Angels this week and hitting a few of the things we didn’t get to last week.  The book is good and there are lots of ways to play them.  It’s time to get those models on the table!

    Hey folks,

The Dark Angels will be incredibly hard to beat.  They have durability we haven’t seen since people had 2+ re-rollable saves.   I’m kidding.  It’s not that bad but this codex has the ability to put some serious brick units on the able.  The only thing you have to determine is which of them you like best.

It’s awesome to have these options.  Deathwing was a meme army for two decades and now – whao..  Players who’ve treasured the lore and their collections this whole time are definitely getting rewarded.

The Ravenwing has been outclassed by other marine bike armies in the past and I think we all scratched our head a bit wondering why. Well.. wonder no longer. This Wing gets a lot of love too.  We talk about some crafty ways to deny your opponent some points while racking them up yourself.

In the final moments of the show we talk about kitbashing the easy build models.  It’s easier than you may think!

With a single multi part kit you can build some truly unique models. A few snips and slices and you’re well on your way with a personalized army even with the single pose figs.  Give it a try.

  • FTN Episode 371 – Are You Ready For The Dark Angels? They Are Ready For You!

Holy Smokes!  The Dark Angels are going to take the tabletop by storm.  Any long time fan of this Chapter should instantly fall back in love with them all over again.  This codex has depth, power, elegance and more fun options than you can shake a stick at.

    Hey all,

Adam could barely contain himself speaking about Dark Angels this week and for good reason.  Want to play Deathwing?  You can.  Want to play Ravenwing?  Yep, no problem.  Want to play Stormwing?  You betcha.   You can do this all with confidence as well as these armies seem to have what it takes to hold their own on the battle field.

If you already have these archetypes in your collection then you will be ready to hit the ground running as soon as you get this book in your hands.  There are some incredibly powerful things in this book in the form of Relics, ready made Special Characters and powerhouse DIY leaders.

The Dark Angels are unique in the fact that their ‘super doctrine’ advances with them through the first three turns of the game  The effect changes a bit each turn but wow.. it’s all good.

The only struggle will be remembering to use all the rules!  Grim Resolve comes into play in some pretty novel ways that should make for cool flavorful interactions on the tabletop.  I love it when theme gets represented in the rules.

I hope you all caught us representing the Las Vegas nOpen this past week.  The folks behind the scenes kept us running for three days straight and I had a blast.  Steve Joll sang us out in the most spectacular way.  Check it out!

  • FTN Episode 369 – Is Mortarion Too Good? Hot or Not? Death Guard Codex Review

The Death Guard are hitting people’s hands today and man oh man – This is what a Primarch is supposed to be.  Men tremble where this monster steps.  He is the lord of plagues and the reaper of men.  Wow.  But is it too good?  We don’t really answer that question but we do answer why he will be on a lot of tables. This is our review of the Death Guard codex.

    Hey all,

Chaos has always sort of been the little brother of the Imerpium.   It had cool rules but always in that ‘rival’ category.  Not any longer!  This is our review of some of the highlights from the Death Guard codex.  It’s amazing.  This dex is a serious contender right out of the gate and not just due to the Daemon Primarch.  There is a lot of power in this book. Strap in!

The Las Vegas nOpen is this coming weekending!  Check out the schedule here. Please get some Merch if you can! You can grab a t-shirt and other goodies at the link here. What’s really cook about the DG is that you can make a case for many of the signature DG units.  Do you like playing with terminators?  Throw them in a list.  Do you like the idea of a legion of troops advancing through the mist in the iconic Rhino?   You got it!  Want to have the gibbering mouths of chaos nipping at the enemy?  Ohh boy… take 10.

This Codex is crowned by one of the most glorious giant models in any game – the Primarch Mortarion.  He is everything you would hope him to be.  He buffs your army while striking terror in the hearts of your opponent.  He belches plague and ruin as he glides across the field.  Yes, please.

This will be an incredibly strong army to face on the table. On the surface read it seems like it will be great at winning 9th edition games.  Meaning you will have durable troops camping on objectives and daring anyone to come close.  Once they come close, they will never get away!

  • FTN Episode 368 – 40k FAQ Review and How To Get Started With Terrain?

We give a brief run down of the major 40k FAQ changes we saw last week.  There are TON of changes and point updates but rather than go over the whole shebang we hit the highlights and will discuss the changes as they come up in future episodes.  We talk about 40k terrain in the back half of the show and ‘when to splurge.’  Let’s go!

    Hey folks,

Don’t forget we’ll be talking about the Las Vegas nOpen. This is an amazing project undertaken by some dedicated broadcasters and streamers. This is going to be an absolute blast. Please check out the website and mark your calendars.

Please get some Merch if you can! You can grab a t-shirt and other goodies at the link here. If you order yours by Jan 15th you can have it in time for the event! Please join us if you can.

The FAQ did actually answer some Frequently Asked Questions this time. There are lots of subtle but impactful changes.  The change to scoring objectives in the last half of the last turn is freaking awesome and we don’t say enough good things about it.  I think the game is well on its way to becoming less of a ‘go first to win’ situation.

After the break we jump into our first discussion on how to start your own terrain collection.  This is such a weird topic.  Of course we all want crazy good terrain on our tables but how do we justify the cost and the time?  The answer is – you get to decide that for yourself.

We strongly encourage you to be strategic with how you tackle the terrain question.  First and foremost please remember it needs to perform a function on the table.  Don’t go out and spend a ton only to find out you didn’t actually enhance your play experience.   Then, set a budget.  Buy what you can when you can and don’t beat yourself up about it.

  • FTN Episode 367 – Do You Make Decisions In A Vacuum? How To Avoid It

Sometimes we don’t know what we don’t know and there is nothing we can do about that… Or is there?  We go through a thought exercise about falling back on what we do know to help us dig ourselves out of tight situations.  Later in the show we talk about the timeline retcon happening at the Black Library.

    Hey all,

We kick the show off talking about the Las Vegas nOpen. This is an amazing project undertaken by some dedicated broadcasters and streamers. This is going to be an absolute blast. Please check out the website and mark your calendars.

We  speak a little about decision making in this show.  With the volumes of information you’re expected to just ‘know’ when playing 40k at a competitive level can you ever know it all?  Probably not but that shouldn’t be a daunting thing.  You’ve likely amassed enough information to be just fine.  Realizing it’s time to use it and how to apply it is the real trick.

We believe that an information vacuum is more of a perception issue than a reality. Are we right?  How close did we get on this subject?

At the back of the show we talk about the time line unskip at the Black Library.  This is interesting because we haven’t seen this sort of thing at BL before. so why are we seeing it now?   Ultimately its a low impact change but it might be the tip of the iceberg for something cool yet to come.  I’m crossing my fingers.

We kick the show off talking about the Las Vegas nOpen. This is an amazing project undertaken by some dedicated broadcasters and streamers. This is going to be an absolute blast. Please check out the website and mark your calendars.

You can grab a t-shirt and other goodies at the link here.  If you order yours by Jan 15th you can have it in time for the event!  We’ll have raffles and stuff coming too and as special giveaways for people that use the #lvno leading up to and during the broadcast.  There are ton of amazing people partnered to make this happen.  Please join us if you can.

We kick the show off nominating our favorite models from 2020 to the unofficial hall of fame.  We recorded our list before GW published their poll results.  Its neat to see how close we were to our thoughts and yalls.  There were a lot of stellar things released last year.

In the middle and back half of the show we talk about paint tutorials in general but also specifically about those features in the White Dwarf magazine.

The big  take away is that when you’re looking at tutorials its not always about the specific miniature but also about the color or technique itself.  If you can’t find ‘exactly’ what you’re looking for you might be able to find something you can co-opt for your own project.

We’re delighted to continue to represent Discount Games Inc as sponsor of our show. They are helping bring FTN to you. Please check them out and support the organizations that support us. Discount Games Inc. offers Games Workshop products at 15% off the suggested retail at their website here. You can send an email to the owner Jay. These guys run a podcast too! Check them out.

Forge the Narrative is mostly a Warhammer 40k Podcast. Each episode is about an hour long. This ideally gives you something neat to listen to on your way to work, or on the way back home. Maybe you can even listen while you are painting or modeling!

Please follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook!

FTN mostly focuses on 40k, but again you will see in the first few episodes we take a severe deep dive into nerdom. These have been a blast to record and I hope they help pass the time for you. We are now on Pandora!! If you’re looking for another place to listen or you’ve shifted to that platform you can find us there.

  • FTN Episode 365 – This Episode is Not About Warhammer 40k! – sort of

We divert briefly into nerd culture for the first half of the show.  We get to the fun thing where a group of friends discover one of the friends has a gap in their knowledge about something nerdy.  So we do what happens so frequently in our scene (for the better) and fill them in on it.  No gate keeping in this episode.  Later we have a vendor spotlight segment and then we talk about the fallacy of list building.

One of the coolest things about our culture, specifically geek culture, is that we are so happy to talk about the things we’re passionate about.  Adam gives Paul and Red the perfect opportunity to pass along something we care about.

This was cool because the door was cracked open by a simple question and then Red and Paul got to learn about a cool thing they shared, exchanged information and more importantly, got to pass on something super cool to Adam.  Hopefully…

In the middle of the show Jay from Discount Games Inc. joins us to talk about how he’s handled the COVID crisis and to also share how much he appreciates the support from our listeners.  We definitely support shopping local but when you can spread it around or don’t have a local shop please frequent the most excellent online retailers. Jay is definitely one of those.

The last half of the show we talk about how quickly we are to criticize lists we see online.  I think we’re all prone to do it but we peek behind the curtain and talk about what we think is the best way to engage on some of this stuff.
