What does it mean to truly forgive?
In this episode, Lawrence and Male-Rose open the show discussing the meaning of forgiveness. We apologize and receive apologies daily, but every apology does not come with genuine remorse. Apologies without changed behaviors can come across as flat and insincere, leading to resentment and anger. Forgiveness is the only way to move from these feelings, but whose responsibility is forgiveness? The person receiving the apology has a choice; they can hang on to the pain and think about revenge, or they can let it go. Male-Rose and Lawrence continue on to discuss the power of intention, how maturity changes forgiveness, and being impulsive.
Forgiveness in 2020 does not look like what it did 30 years ago. In a time when our lives are highly visible because of the power of the internet, our mistakes can feel even more permanent. It can be difficult to apologize and forgive when you feel a tension between who you were and who you are. It is even easier to be reminded of your mistakes with social media. This can lead us to internalized shame. Stay tuned as Lawrence and Mel-Rose discuss coping with shame, cancel culture, and the impact of forgiving yourself.
