Most of us grew up with the same picture of heaven. Clouds. Harps. White robes. Souls leaving this world behind forever. But when John reaches the final pages of Revelation, that is not what he sees. He sees a city coming down. From Eden to the tabernacle, from the words of Jesus to Paul’s teaching on resurrection, from Isaiah’s new earth to Revelation 21 and 22, Scripture keeps pointing in the same direction: God dwelling with His people, creation made new, bodies raised in glory, tears wiped away, and death finally gone. The Bible’s final hope is not a ghostly existence floating somewhere beyond the stars. It is far more solid than that. A renewed earth. A resurrected body. A table. A city. Open gates. Faces you recognize. And the promise that one day, “they shall see His face.” This telling does not dismiss the comfort Christians have found in beloved hymns or different traditions. It simply asks us to slow down and look again at what the last chapters of the Bible actually say.
