Sermon on Matthew 26:17-30 on Maundy Thursday | Pastor Ryan Pennington
Pastor's annotation: At 15:26 in the sermon I state, "When Jesus is dying on the cross, two times the soldiers dipped a sponge in sour wine, and Jesus would not drink it." This is not entirely accurate. According to Matthew's account, he refuses the first time (27:34), and the second time is left ambiguous (27:49), pointing to a future fulfillment of God's eschatological kingdom. In John's account, the evangelist notes that Jesus clearly receives the wine the second time (19:29-30) right before he announces "It is finished!" My apologies for the discrepancy. But the payoff from combining the two accounts highlights an amazing truth! The future of God's kingdom was already breaking in at Jesus' death on the cross.
