We are not saved by faith plus works; we are saved by a faith that leads to works. This is what James tells us in James chapter 2 and verse 17, “Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.” We’re saved by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. When He died on the cross He said, “It is finished” (John 19:30). By that He was saying “I have fulfilled all the types, I have fulfilled all the prophecies and I have paid the full price for sin.” Our redemption is complete, it is finished.
But remember James chapter 2 verse 17, “Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.” James talks about three kinds of faith, only one of which is acceptable to God. He talks about lying faith, “What does it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? Can that kind of faith save him?” “If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, and one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled;” That sounds so pious doesn’t it? “Notwithstanding you give them not those things which are needful to the body; what does it profit?” (vv. 14-16). This is lying faith; it’s all talk, no walk. It’s all declaration, no demonstration, lying faith. A lot of people have that. “Oh yes, oh yes I believe in God, I believe in Christ!” But there’s nothing practical that proves it.
In verse 19 of chapter 2 James talks about trembling faith. He says, “You believe that there is one God? Great! The demons also believe and they tremble, we don’t even tremble, but they do!” Here is trembling faith but it doesn’t save them.
And he talks about real living faith. “Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works” (v. 18). Now he wasn’t boasting here, he was simply quenching the argument! We don’t want to have lying faith that is all words. We don’t want to have trembling faith that’s just all emotion. We want a living faith that involves the mind and the heart and the will and faith that leads to works. That means obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ as we trust and obey.
