  • Perks S8 Ep. 180 | Vicki Johnson | Who? What? Wear - 6-14-23
This week we chat with Vicki Johnson, a debut picture book author whose book, Molly’s Tuxedo, is a delightful story about a child who doesn’t want to wear the frilly, itchy dress and tight shoes her mother thinks is appropriate for school pictures. Molly wants to wear…you guessed it, a tuxedo that has pockets. The book, which is illustrated by Gillian Reid, was published by Little Bee Books in collaboration with GLAAD, a nonprofit organization focused on LGBTQ advocacy and ensuring fair, accurate, and inclusive representation. Vicki tells us all about it and the path to her becoming a writer.
She tells us about her move from DC to a small 200 year old cabin in the woods of WV, her sweaty history, and her new app that has rocked her world.
You can find Vicki at her website www.vickijohnsonwrites.com or on Instagram at @vickijohnsonwrites. You can also see her past work on Instagram at @cabin.reads.

  • The Climate Report #378 | The Lowdown on Climate | 6-12-23
Today’s topic is The Lowdown on Climate .
Here’s the lowdown: We have a living planet, and we will heal our climate by attending to her living systems.
It’s not all about CO2. It’s not all about greenhouse gases. It’s not all about fossil fuels. CO2, in my view, has a minor role in catastrophic events like flooding, drought, wildfires and sea level rise, which are all caused--in large measure--by how we treat the land and the ecosystems that reside on the land.
We will talk about how trees make rain and how plants drive our water cycles. If we had healthy water cycles flowing through healthy ecosystems, we would have much less of the flooding, drought, heat waves and wildfires.
Trees make rain and plants create water cycles by slowing the progress of the rainwater toward the streams and rivers. Trees and plants make the soil healthy so it will soak up the rain like a sponge. And trees and plants create a reservoir of water that holds heat and staves off extremes of hot and cold, flooding and drought.

  • Sustainability Now! | Marlesha Woods + Dr. Renee Campbell | We Don't Wither | 6-12-23
On this week’s Sustainability Now!, your host, Justin Mog, kicks off an exciting summer series of interviews with local women/fem artists who are all engaged in some form of struggle for social justice and are all featured in an exciting new exhibit called “We Don’t Wither,” on display at the Muhammad Ali Center April 1 - December 18, 2023. Created to engage our community, We Don’t Wither examines the intersection of art and activism.
The artists featured in this exhibit have created art or chosen from their art, pieces that respond to current socio-cultural and socio-political situations, lived experiences, and related current events—to see our world and our community through their unique perspectives. It is our objective to celebrate the often unheard experiences, opinions, feelings, and perspectives from those who work, create, and fight in our city; to share their artwork and views with our visitors; and to provide a space for conversation and reflection. This exhibit is included in the regular price of admission, but you can see the exhibit for free and meet the artists themselves during any of the upcoming ARTIST SHOWCASES:
