  • Sustainability Now! | Madeline Ostrander | At Home On An Unruly Planet | 8-15-22
On this week’s show we bring you a compelling conversation about the evolving meaning of home in the age of climate chaos with science journalist, Madeline Ostrander, author of the brand new book, At Home on an Unruly Planet - Finding Refuge on a Changed Earth, released by Holt on August 2nd, 2022. Learn more at http://madelineostrander.com
How do we find a sense of home and rootedness in a time of unprecedented upheaval? What happens when the seasons and rhythms in which we have built our lives go off-kilter? In her new book, Madeline Ostrander reflects on the climate crisis not as an abstract scientific or political problem but as a palpable force that is now affecting all of us at home. She offers vivid accounts of people fighting to protect places they love from increasingly dangerous circumstances. A firefighter works to rebuild her town after catastrophic Western wildfires. A Florida preservationist strives to protect one of North America’s most historic cities from rising seas. An urban farmer struggles to transform a California city plagued by fossil fuel disasters. An Alaskan community heads for higher ground as its land erodes.
Madeline pairs deeply reported stories of hard-won optimism with lyrical essays on the strengths we need in an era of crisis. The book is required reading for anyone who wants to make a home in the twenty-first century.

  • Truth To Power | Shively Community Food Park | Aug. 12, 2022
This week’s Truth to Power is all about access to public land for urban food growers and community benefits. Joining us this week are several key players in the proposal for a Shively Community Food Park (https://www.facebook.com/ShivelyCommunityFoodPark/) that will be going before the Shively City Council on Monday evening! Haileigh Arnold is Manager of the Hope Community Farm, a project of Gate of Hope Ministries, that will soon be displaced from its home on Bicknell Ave. and would like to relocate to Shively. Alix Davidson is the Director of Strategic Initiatives at the Food Literacy Project, whose Iroquois Farm has already been displaced and is eager to provide urban farming opportunities for Shively’s youth. And LeTicia Marshall from Bearfruit & Grow is the Shively resident who first had the vision for converting Shively’s abandoned golf course on Crums Lane into a productive, healing, and recreational space for the community.
The Shively City Council will be discussing the proposal for the Shively Community Food Park on Monday, Aug. 15th, 6:45pm, Shively City Hall (3920 Dixie Highway). Most members of the Shively City Council have told organizers that they will not be supporting this important proposal. This is very discouraging news, but there has not yet been an official vote. Organizers have submitted a final written proposal and are calling for the Council to vote on it at the next council meeting on Aug. 15th. The organizers are encouraging citizens to show up, have their voices heard, and get a clear answer from the City.
If you’d like to speak and make a public comment, you’ll need to sign-up between 6:15 and 6:30. But the meeting starts at 6:45, and supporters can also just show up - there will be signs & fans available to show support. More info on the meeting is at shivelyky.gov/events

  • Perks S. 7 Ep. 142 | Cassie Moses | One-On-One Reading Rendevous | 8-10-22
This week we speak with Cassie Moses, a mom from a small town in Central Kentucky. Cassie grew up in Eastern Kentucky at the Hindman Settlement School where her father was the administrator and where she met and befriended lots of Kentucky artists through the Appalachian Writers Workshop.
Cassie began a book club several years ago with her three daughters, and it has offered a way for her to read books that they’ve selected and have special one-on-one time with each of them to discuss these books while doing something special, like going out for ice cream or lunch. We also spend a few minutes speaking with her oldest child, Riley, who shares some of the great books she’s read with her mom.

  • The Cilmate Report #340 | Dear Democrats, Please offer voters SOMETHING
My email inbox featured a message from the Sierra Club, as follows:
“Those who want to stay alive should vote for Democrats. Those who are willing to die from a severe heat wave (like the one in Europe at this very moment), by drowning in a flood, from severe trauma in a hurricane or tornado, or from smoke inhalation in a wildfire, can vote Republican.”
This episode is my response. I assert that Democratic candidates do not give voters any reason to get out and vote.
Fixing that problem would be easy enough. There are numerous issues that are favored by supermajorities of Americans. One party or the other has to decide to run on POPULAR issues.
