  • Sustainability Now! | Todd Bluechel | ABC Supply | Solar & Roofing | 1-27-25
This week on Sustainability Now!, we reconnect with a former guest from several years ago, Todd Bluechel, who is now Renewable Energy Sales Specialist with ABC Supply (https://abcsupply.com). Join host Justin Mog as we explore the state of distributed renewable energy in Kentucky and around the country. We’ll especially focus on supply chain issues in the solar industry and common sense connections to the roofing industry.
Todd has worked in sustainability for 25 years now, having held positions with Balboa Pacific doing waste to energy (pyrolytic gasification); CollectiveSun doing solar financing exclusively for nonprofits nationwide (churches, schools); OilTech collecting and converting used cooking oil into biofuel; and the largest EPC (engineering, procurement, construction) company in California, where he served as a Senior Commercial Energy Consultant. Now he’s helping the nation’s largest supplier of roofing materials, ABC Supply, develop its solar offerings in the Midwest (covering IN, OH, TN, and KY).
Don’t miss this opportunity to get a hopeful, insider’s view into the future of the solar industry in our region!
As always, our feature is followed by your community action calendar for the week, so get your calendars out and get ready to take action for sustainability NOW!

  • #234 Critical Thinking for Everyone! I Marcis Fennell | Trash Talking in Sport | January 23, 2025
Patty and Brain interview Dr. Marcis Fennell from the Department of Health & Sport Sciences at the University of Louisville. Dr. Fennell's research illuminates the social and moral aspects of "trash talking" among high-performing athletes. In this fascinating conversation, we learn the roots of "trash talking" (boasts and bragging) with and for your opponent and the surprisingly prosocial ways that this behavior can stimulate connection and competition. We use our critical thinking lenses to look deeply at our own assumptions and experience with trash talking to come to a new appreciation of this concept, thanks to Dr. Fennell.

  • Truth to Power | Baha Hilo | Surviving Zionist Apartheid | January 24, 2025
This week, we bring you the voice of Baha Hilo, Palestinian activist and educator, speaking with the Louisville Ceasefire Coalition at an event organized by the Palestine Justice Network of the Presbyterian Church USA (https://thePJN.org or https://www.facebook.com/pjnpcusa). He spoke on Thursday evening, Jan. 23rd, at the Fairness Campaign Office, on Frankfort Avenue here in Louisville.
Baha has traveled to the U.S. from the West Bank to share his personal story about surviving the ongoing Zionist apartheid state in Israel-Palestine. He travels next to Columbus, Indiana for a talk at First Presbyterian on Saturday, Jan. 25th at 1:30pm.
On a visit that overlapped with the beginning of the ceasefire in Gaza, MLK day, and Trump's second inauguration, we are reminded that we are making history as we live it. May we all be renewed in our commitments to work for justice, knowing that our hope is in things eternal- not just the success of our own lifetimes.
We begin with a short message from Baha Hilo recorded October 25, 2023. It is entitled "Begin The Planning to Expel Apartheid." Go to https://youtube.com/@bahahilo for clickable links that were mentioned.
Truth to Power airs every Friday at 9pm, Saturday at 11am, and Sunday at 7pm on Louisville's grassroots, community radio station, Forward Radio 106.5fm WFMP and live streams at http://forwardradio.org

  • Truth to Power | Les Leopold | The Labor Institute | Dems Losing the Working Class | 1-17-25
On today's show, we listen in on a very timely community conversation hosted on January 14th, 2025 with the Oberlin Club of Washington, DC, focused on the question: "Why is the working-class leaving the Democratic Party?" The conversation featured remarks by Les Leopold, Executive Director of The Labor Institute, and a 1969 graduate of Oberlin College. You can watch the full event and see the slides at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThOll28AuYY
In assessing the 2024 elections, many voters are asking: has the working-class abandoned the Democratic Party? If so, why? What does that tell us about the views of working people and what does that suggest about the Party and its future?
There are two major theories to account for the extensive working-class shift to the Republicans since 1996. One argument rooted in social issues is that working-class resentment against women, immigrants, LBGTQ+ communities and other ""woke"" concerns has resulted in an embrace of right-wing candidates whose supporters Hillary Clinton once termed "a basket of deplorables". The other theory is that economic issues like job insecurity, stagnant wages and declining prospects for the future have pushed workers away from the Democrats. What does the data reveal?
Les Leopold offers an assessment based on findings in his latest book "Wall Street's War on Workers: How Mass Layoffs and Greed Are Destroying the Working Class and What to Do About It." Les Leopold co-founded and currently directs The Labor Institute, a non-profit organization that designs research and educational programs on occupational safety and health, the environment and economics for unions, workers centers and community organizations. In addition to "Wall Street's War on Workers," he is the author of "Defiant German, Defiant Jew"; "Runaway Inequality"; "How to Make a Million Dollars an Hour: Why Financial Elites get away with siphoning off America's Wealth"; "The Looting of America: How Wall Street's Game of Fantasy Finance destroyed our Jobs, Pensions and Prosperity, and What We Can Do About It"; and "The Man Who Hated Work and Loved Labor: The Life and Times of Tony Mazzocchi." Les graduated from Oberlin with a degree in Government and earned an MPA from Princeton University's School of Public and International Affairs.
On Truth to Power each week, we gather people from around the community to discuss the state of the world, the nation, the state, and the city! It's a community conversation like you won't hear anywhere else!
Truth to Power airs every Friday at 9pm, Saturday at 11am, and Sunday at 4pm on Louisville's grassroots, community radio station, Forward Radio 106.5fm WFMP and live streams at https://forwardradio.org
