  • Truth to Power | Highlights from 2024 Environmental Justice Conference | Ted Smith & Rachel Hamilton | 10-25-24
On this week's program, we bring you some highlights from the 2024 Environmental Justice Conference hosted by the West Jefferson County Community Task Force (WJCCTF) on Saturday, Oct. 19th, 9am - 3pm, at the University Club at the University of Louisville and online. Funding for this free public conference was provided by the Environmental Protection Agency RATHA Grant and the Louisville and Kentucky Branch of the NAACP.
The Theme of this 8th Annual Conference was “Environmental Health: Knowledge Is Power.” Participants enjoyed a day of information with opportunities to ask questions concerning the three-year Rubbertown Air Toxics and Health Assessment (RATHA) research grant funded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), learned about other topics of environmental interest, and participated in an Environmental Roundtable. The research partners for the RATHA grant include the West Jefferson County Community Task Force in collaboration with the Air Pollution Control District, the Christina Lee Brown Envirome Institute of UofL, the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness, and the Park DuValle Community Health Center. EJ Groups, Concerned Citizens, and Residents of West Louisville neighborhoods and areas near Rubbertown are encouraged to work together to address air toxics and their impact on our health.
This week, we hear from two of the day's speakers:
    - Dr. Ted Smith, UofL professor of Environmental Medicine & Director of the Christina Lee Brown Envirome Institute's Center for Healthy Air, Water and Soil.
    - Rachel Hamilton, Director of Metro Louisville Air Pollution Control District (APCD)
Community participation is critical to this three-year research project's success. We need to hear your voices about environmental concerns. Stay Engaged and Informed! We hope that you will join us at future WJCCTF environmental events. Learn more and find the full recording at https://facebook.com/wjcctf. Learn more about Louisville's health disparities at https://LouHealthData.com
On Truth to Power each week, we gather people from around the community to discuss the state of the world, the nation, the state, and the city! It's a community conversation like you won't hear anywhere else!
Truth to Power airs every Friday at 9pm, Saturday at 11am, and Sunday at 4pm on Louisville's grassroots, community radio station, Forward Radio 106.5fm WFMP and live streams at forwardradio.org

  • Sacrifice Zones | VOCAL Kentucky Harm Reduction | 10-20-2024
Today, I am broadcasting some interviews that were done on site at Voices of Community Activists and Leaders Kentucky. We will hear from Maurice, Carl and Raquel in this show. As I began the editing process for this, most of what I said just got scratched. My questions served to prompt dialogue sometimes but mostly highlighted my ignorance about the obstacles this community faces. The important thing is that these conversations serve to humanize a population that has been shuffled around, neglected, criminalized, and used as political pawns. I hope when you hear them share their stories, you will be reminded of their humanity and that they matter as much as you do. I hope you will listen to the entire series on harm reduction from VOCALKentucky as we learn how to be a part of this community

  • Truth To Power | The Death Of Public School | Cara Fitzpatrick | 10-18-24
On this week's program, we listen back to an important event held at Louisville's Main Public Library on October 15th, 2024. Today, education is poised to become a private commodity rather than a universal good, and the very existence of the traditional public school is threatened, according to Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Cara Fitzpatrick. Join her for this compelling discussion on the future of public schooling. Cara Fitzpatrick is a Story Editor for Chalkbeat National and New York. She covered education at newspapers in Florida and won the Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting in 2016 for a series about school segregation. The series also was honored with a Polk award and the Worth Bingham for Investigative Journalism, among others. She was a New America fellow in 2019 and a Spencer fellow at Columbia University in 2018. She is a graduate of the University of Washington and the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. She wrote the 2003 book about the history of school choice in America called "The Death of Public School: How Conservatives Won the War Over Education in America". She lives in New York City with her husband and three children.

His op-ed “Church schools restrict choice, yet want public funds" appeared in the Louisville Courier September 16th, 2024. This week we speak with Daniel Olivas, a lawyer with the California Department of Justice, who is also a novelist, poet, and playwright. His novel, Chicano Frankenstein, which published in March of this year, was an obvious book pick for Carrie because she loves Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. The novel has been optioned by Universal Television, so fingers crossed on that.
Olivas’ reimagining of Shelley’s 1818 novel has an unnamed man as the narrator. He is a paralegal who has been reanimated from the corpse of a Mexican-American man, one of many such reanimated people (derogatively called “stitchers”) who are part of an effort to deal with the US’ labor crisis, but he struggles with his identity. How can a person have an identity if all knowledge of their family, their interests, their feelings, their thoughts have been stripped away? In addition to the idea of selfhood, the novel also explores the cruelty of politicians who pander to fear and racism, harming the people of their communities that one would expect them to protect.
    Books Mentioned in this Episode:
1- Chicano Frankenstein by Daniel Olivas
    2- Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
3- The Distance Between Us by Reyna Grande
4- Artificial Life After Frankenstein by Eileen M. Hunt
5- A 5 Star Read Recommended by Fellow Book Lover The Biblioholic @thebiblioholic_ - Dorothy Must Die series by Danielle Page
