  • Sustainability Now! | East Leeds Community Radio | Think Global, Act Local | 3-25-24
On this week’s program, your host, Justin Mog, connects across The Pond with fellow community radio hosts at East Leeds Community Radio in Louisville's Sister City of Leeds, England. Rachael Unsworth & Clarrie Ramsden are heard each month on the program "Think Global, Act Local" on East Leeds Community Radio / Chapel FM (https://www.chapelfm.co.uk/elfm-player/archive/?_sf_s=climate). Rachael is the host of the show, as well as a professional geographer, seasoned tour guide, and presenter (https://www.leedscitywalkingtours.co.uk/). Clarrie is a regular reporter on the program, and also does some amazing local activism, running a group called Climate Action Seacroft.  It's part of Climate Action Leeds, a 5 year program across Leeds, funded by the UK National Lottery (https://www.climateactionleeds.org.uk/).
Listen in as we compare notes about our respective communities, how we are acting locally to combat climate chaos, and how we each use radio to engage our communities in the process of transition toward a more sustainable future. Leeds has an aspiration to go carbon neutral and Louisville has just released a Priority Climate Action Plan for the 11-county
region (https://louisvilleky.gov/government/sustainability/climate-action-and-resilience-plans) after Louisville Metro Council set goals in a February 2020 Resolution for Clean, Renewable Energy:
    • 100% clean renewable electricity for Metro government operations by 2030
    • 100% clean energy for Metro government operations by 2035
    • 100% clean energy community-wide by 2040
This is the first program co-produced by sister stations, Forward Radio and Chapel FM. We invite you to join us for some live dialogue with our new friends at East Leeds Community Radio during Forward Radio's 7th Birthday Party on Saturday, April 13th 5-8pm at Logan Street Market, 1001 Logan St.
This program would not have been possible without the talented dedication of Think Global, Act Local's Producer Lucy Smickersgill and Engineer Phil Driscoll. Many thanks to them!

This week we’re talking about linked short story collections. What are linked short stories, though?
These are stories that are collected and somehow linked to each other. That link can be very explicit or very subtle. They can be linked by one character who threads her/his way throughout every one or who is only mentioned marginally. They can be linked by several characters. They can be linked by the setting–if they are set in a certain town or state or country.
But they can also be linked by theme or symbol or a common experience of characters. They could all be about a shared experience, like parenthood or death or
love. Or a combination of these things.

  • Truth To Power | Paisley Currah | Legislating Gender | 3-15-24
On this week's program, we bring you a vital community conversation about Legislating Gender. On March 7th, the University of Louisville presented its 2024 Minx Auerbach Lecture featuring Paisley Currah, Professor of Women's & Gender Studies and Political Science at the City University of New York (CUNY), and author of the book, "Sex is as Sex Does: Governing Transgender Identity."
The legislative assault on transgender people in the United States seems new, but governments have been regulating the lives of transgender people for decades. Outside of trans communities, few were aware of the Kafkaesque web of regulations that trans people find themselves in. Now that policing of the gender binary has been transformed from an unremarkable aspect of bureaucratic policymaking to a weapon in the culture wars, everyone is paying attention. In this talk, Paisley Currah will explore the connections between contemporary conflicts over trans issues and the history and persistence of gender and racial hierarchies in American society.
Truth to Power brings you conversations you won't hear anywhere else on the airwaves. The program airs every Friday at 9pm, Saturday at 11am, and Sunday at 7pm on Louisville's grassroots, community radio station, Forward Radio 106.5fm WFMP and live streams at http://forwardradio.org

This week we chat with Kari Heggen, a bookstagrammer from Iowa who set herself a goal to read all the Newbery Award winners from the past 102 years. Originally she had planned to read 10 a year but she ultimately decided to just get her done. She read 49 of the winners in 2023 and got a jump start on 2024 by reading this year’s winner, The Eye and the Impossible by Dave Eggers.
Kari talks about the highs and lows of her Newbery Award challenge. Books from the early days of the award were decidedly not great. But by the 1960s, Kari got into a better groove and found herself enjoying books for the first time and often the second time which brought back some childhood nostalgia.
