“Weaving the Food Web: The People’s Summit on Food Systems and Urban Agriculture” was organized September 8-9, 2023 by the Food in Neighborhoods community coalition and the Cooperative Extension Program of Kentucky State University.
The People’s Summit began with tours in the city to raise awareness about local food apartheid and grassroots efforts to increase healthy food access as well as spotlight the work of urban growers. On Saturday, the Summit featured workshop-style events involving popular education and in-depth political strategy discussions. These events addressed topics such as: food apartheid and environmental racism; youth leadership training; how to grow your own food; cooperative economics and Community Supported Agriculture (CSAs); urban and rural land access; New American success stories; and local food policy advocacy.
Weaving the Food Web is a transformative act of healing, solidarity, and collective action toward realizing food justice, human rights and dignified livelihoods for all. Exciting food justice initiatives were featured and the input of participants - through dialogue, art and celebration - were gathered during the day. Learn more at http://foodinneighborhoods.org

  • Bench Talk | The Woman Who Read The Stars - Mosses Around Caves - September Sky | Sept. 11, 2023
Another example of gender bias in the sciences. Mary Williams describes the career of Dr. Cecilia Payne, the first person to describe the composition of stars back in the 1920s. Payne's controversial results were criticized at first, so her career in astrophysics stalled. Eventually however, her conclusions were found to be correct, and her discovery seen as groundbreaking. She finally received the recognition she deserved in the 1940s and 1950s. Next, Amanda Fuller interviews Morghan McCool (University of Louisville) about McCool's research on the diversity of mosses that grow around the entrances to caves. Finally, J Scott Miller describes what we can see in the night sky during the month of September.
‘Bench Talk: The Week in Science’ is a weekly radio program that airs on WFMP Louisville FORward Radio 106.5 FM (forwardradio.org) every Monday at 7:30 pm, Tuesday at 11:30 am, and Wednesday at 7:30 am.

Sometimes when people have experienced a loss or some kind of traumatic event, they are encouraged to write about it, which gives them an outlet for their feelings and a way to help them process the experience. Our guest this week, Willie Carver Jr. was the 2022 Kentucky Teacher of the Year but he experienced loss and trauma when both he and his students were targeted because he is gay. He began putting his thoughts and feelings into poetic lines and stanzas.
The book of poems that resulted, Gay Poems for Red States published by University Press of Kentucky, helped him look back at prejudices he had experienced as a child living in rural Kentucky, as a gay man, and as a teacher offering a place of security for his students. The poetry served as an impetus for him to engage more as an activist, even testifying before the House Subcommittee on Civil Liberties and Civil Rights concerning the need for rights for LGBTQ students and educators. Book Riot has named Gay Poems for Red States one of the best of the year.
    Books Mentioned in this Episode:
1- Gay Poems for Red States by Willie Carver Jr

  • Sustainability Now! | Doughnut Economics Roundtable | Sept. 3, 2023
On this week’s Sustainability Now!, your host, Justin Mog, welcomes to the studio a citizens’ panel for a conversation about the concept of Doughnut Economics! In 2017, renegade economist, Kate Raworth, authored the influential book “Doughnut Economics: 7 Ways to Think Like a 21st Century Economist.” Imagine an economy that actually worked for everyone and did not lead to planetary collapse. Imagine an economy in which GDP growth is not the primary objective. What if economists used more meaningful metrics to gauge the success of an economy. What if we placed thriving rather than growth at the heart of our economy.
To discuss these issues and dive deep into the concept of Doughnut Economics, this week we sit down with John Hartmann, Edward Burns, Terrell Holder (from Forward Radio’s proud community partner, the Greater Louisville Sierra Club), and Forward Radio’s newest host, UofL Economist, Tom Lambert (host of Economic Impact - learn more at https://www.forwardradio.org/economicimpact).
