The sons of liberty are at it again and John Adams had to get involved, publicly, to dispel a rumor about his dedication to the cause. And even though they all knew Francis Bernard was leaving, they didn’t relent in their shenanigans and tomfoolery. There was drama, celebrations, and an incredible amount of pettiness in Boston, 1769. They even held a massive party to celebrate the anniversary of the Stamp Act Riots when the little black cloud tore Andrew Oliver’s house down.

Spoiler alert: it doesn't go well for the crown. Long before John Hancock signed the Declaration of Independence marginally bigger than the other signers, he was arrested for smuggling. Who represented Hancock in court? None other than Abigail Adam's husband John Adams.

On today’s episode of Founded we’re finding out how Boston started the American Revolution via newspapers. Obviously Samuel Adams is the star of the show but it’s more than what he did, it’s how he did it. The British decided that a military occupation of Boston would be the best way to quell the mobs but they were wrong, their decisions only served to give the opposition more ammo. The opposition who had control of the government from the inside out, things get sticky and by this point America is well on its way to declaring independence, all the way back in 1768.

On today’s episode of Founded we’re finding out about the beginning of the military occupation of Boston. Samuel Adams crafted the circular letter on behalf of Massachusetts about the Townshend Acts and it caused big problems, especially for Boston. When the crown sent troops to Boston in response to the behavior of Bostonians things got more out of control. The sons of liberty got back to their shenanigans and the sheriff was held hostage over a previously vacant building, and things will only escalate from here, subtle foreshadowing.

Samuel Adams was committed to chaos while John Hancock was committed to being a problem for customs officials. The town of Boston was a certified problem for the crown. Many seemed to have a feeling that these conflicts would only escalate but no one seemed to be able to stop it and the decisions made by the crown only seemed to make matters worse.
