Four At The Back episodes

  • Episode 12: Middlesbrough 1996/97
Season 2 continues in the North East as we look at the Riverside Galacticos; a season of hope, promise, despair and ultimately relegation. A Middlesbrough team containing Juninho, Ravanelli and Emerson somehow conspired to end up in the second tier via a controversial points deduction, and to top it all off, went on to lose two finals at Wembley - a bigger rollercoaster ride in 9 months than most football fans experience in their lifetimes.

  • Episode 11: Aston Villa 1992/93
Season 2 starts with an experimental formation as a key player is forced to sit on the bench! We're carving open Big Ron's Aston Villa side from the first season of the Premier League as we know it, way back in 1992. This was a time of transition for English football, and this week we look at how close Villa came to taking advantage of the big hitters failing to adapt to new regulations, and why they ultimately fell short. Plus - our favourite, ever, season review video.

  • Extra Time: Diego

We sit down to discuss the career and legacy of Diego Maradona, who sadly passed away last week aged 60.

A once in a lifetime talent, fiercely competitive and an infectious will to win; he dragged both Argentina and Napoli to famous victories and had a natural gift for the game that, arguably, no other professional footballer has ever been able to match. He was not without his flaws - but today, simply, we pay tribute to the genius of Maradona.

  • Bonus Episode: Team of the Season!

We're back for extra time - just for fun, we pick our best XIs from the season just gone. Each of us picks our favourite team from the sides discussed in season one, with only one condition; we had to pick at least one player from each side! How do you decide between Bergkamp, Gullit or Cantona? Is it Robben, Overmars, Giggs or Robert? Where do you play your Blackpool player? This was way harder than it looked, and it made for some intriguing selections...

We'll be back in the not too distant future with Season 2 of Four At The Back!

  • Episode 10: Arsenal 1997/98
The finale of season 1 is upon us, and our last stop takes us to Highbury for one of the most revolutionary sides in Premier League history. Good old English grit was blended perfectly with French flair, as Arsene Wenger masterminded a stunning coup of Manchester United's crown - a season that to this day remains one of the most topsy turvy of the Premier League era.

  • Episode 9: Blackpool 2010/11
We're back on home territory, and we're looking at Blackpool's sole foray into the Premier League a decade ago. Their stay was short but memorable; from Ian Holloway's idiosyncratic press conferences to Charlie Adam's hairline - there was a lot to be entertained by. We also explore their sad decline, and the perils of being a small club in an increasingly big pond.

  • Episode 8: AC Milan 1988-94
One of the greatest sides to ever grace a football pitch, this week we delve into the Rossoneri featuring the great Franco Baresi, Ruud Gullit, Marco van Basten and Paolo Maldini, and how they conquered both Serie A and Europe through a tactical revolution and a fine balance between typically Italian defending and the total football approach of the Dutch. "An education" (according to Joe, who had never encountered this team before) for anyone who has never encountered this team before, and a reminder that nothing in football is new anymore.

  • Episode 7: Newcastle United 2002/03
We didn't know it at the time, but this is last season that Newcastle United would threaten the Premier League's elite. Lead by the late, great Sir Bobby Robson, Newcastle battled at home and in Europe and put together one of the most exciting attacking forces in England; this week we look at how it came together and how it all fell apart...for good.

  • Episode 6: Brazil 1994-2002
We're out for the second half, and made a surprising switch at the break! We're dissecting the Brazilian sides that won two World Cups and famously capsized on the brink of another in Paris; there's Romario, Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, and some other players that don't even begin with R! The biggest R here though is redemption, and as feel-good football stories go, this is right up there as we chart the rise, fall and rise again of Ronaldo.

  • Episode 5: Spurs 2009/10
Approaching half time in Season 1, and we're at The Lane to discuss 'Arry's Spurs side that ended up in the Champions League for the first time. We look at why Spurs stuck the landing, and perhaps why teams who managed similar achievements (Everton, Newcastle, Villa to name but a few) did not.
