This week we hit up four films from the pride of the Watts neighborhood in Los Angeles, Charles Burnett. Our “Body & Soul” theme means “black directors and black leads” and Charles Burnett is gonna scratch that auteur itch we’ve been craving. We’re discussing all of his feature films except for 2. “To Sleep With Anger” we’re saving for when we get to California in our states series and we could not find “Namibia: the Struggle for Liberation” be it in valid or underhanded ways. We just kept hitting a French dubbed copy and it’s a pretty damn pricey DVD on Ebay so we will save Namibia for another time. We cover a wide range of humanity in these four films from Neosurrealism to Neo Noir to a lovely little romance. It can be a struggle in south central Los Angeles but it can also be beautiful.
0:00 - Intro / In Memoriam
10:07 - Killer of Sheep (1978)
29:04 - My Brother’s Wedding (1983)
49:14 - The Glass Shield (1994)
1:16:46 - The Annihilation of Fish (1999)
1:32:08 - Outro
