Authority of Jesus vs All Other Authority

Luke 20:14-19

Temple Worship (heart) Has Fallen Apart

1. Chief Priest and Scribes attempt to pit Jesus against Rome to get rid of Him (Luke 20:20-26).

2. The Sadducees act in bad faith by asking about the resurrection from the dead while they do not believe in the resurrection (Luke 20:27-44).

3. The Scribes know the Scripture in their heads, but Scripture has not softened their hearts to the things of God (Luke 20:45-47).

4. Even in worship through giving, things are fundamentally broke (Luke 21:1-4).

The Temple (the building) Will Fall Apart

Luke 21:5-9

1. The Temple will be destroyed (in 70AD Titus conquers).

2. False Teachers will arise declaring the “End is Near” and “I am the Christ.”

- Not every religion is right.

- Not every leader is leading to the right place.

3. Persecution will come – even within families (Luke 21:10-19).

4. Jerusalem will fall (Luke 21: 20-24).

- Jerusalem will be surrounded by Roman forces.

5. The End of the World as we know it is coming but with it, full redemption (Luke 21:25-33).

The Temple Cleansed Because of … Love, pure and undefiled love.

James 1:27

Love of a Holy God is priority 1 in a cleansed temple.

- Thieves should not feel comfortable in the presence of a holy God.

- The disordered temple is cleansed to make it a place where the truth is not in competition with anything else.

- Goal: For God to be exalted, to be truly seen, and heard, and glorified, and worshipped.

A cleansed temple is a place where people are loved.

- The enemy’s goal is distraction – to keep people from hearing and seeing.

- Jesus cries over Jerusalem, and then goes to inspect the temple.

- His compassion for people is connected to his anger in the temple.

- The temple is not like a mall, people are not shopping, leaders are not selling.

A cleansed temple is a place where righteous anger is expressed righteously.

- 1 Peter 4:17

In the Kingdom, authority that is not leveraged to honor God and serve people is invalidated.

2. Foolish – ignore, blame shift, excuse make, deferred life maintenance until pain is gone

3. Wise – seeks God and wise counsel to interpret the root causes, solutions, management.

Your Tongue Is A Weapon—Use It Wisely

A divided heart that lacks full devotion to God.

A Hard Heart – (Proverbs 28:14)

A heart that is stubborn and unyielding to God’s guidance.

A Proud Heart – (Proverbs 21:4)

A heart filled with arrogance and self-reliance, refusing humility before God.

An Unbelieving Heart – (Hebrews 3:12)

A heart that rejects faith in God’s promises and power.
