When students are seeking attention, the way we respond and interact interrupts that disruption.  To change student behaviours, interactions need to be before students demand attention from teachers or peers, and need to be genuine and authentic interactions linked to clear criteria and expectations. We all seek attention and we need to stop seeing this as a negative option for students to communicate with us.

When we think of reinforcement it is much more than praise or positive feedback.  It is a direct link, through authentic and genuine interactions to the criteria, the expectation that we have set.

When we try to reconcile a coaching conversation against what we think should be said, or where a teacher should be, we are not truly listening, and in that moment we are taking away a teachers agency and ability to find fulfilment in their work. Coaching conversations are most successful when we meet the teacher where they are at, and do so through a solution focussed approach. When we listen, we often do so to imagine how it feels to walk in someone else's shoes.  This is based on reconciling their feelings and values with our own. I truly see that good coaching does not try to walk in the shoes of another, they listen and do so with the wholehearted intention to believe what the other person says. Empathy and understanding are not needed when you listen with the intention to believe what the other person is telling you. Listen so that someone else feels heard, not understood.
