  • Are You Protecting Your Joints or Making Them Weaker?

If your knees bother you when you squat, should you stop squatting? And if your shoulders or back give you trouble, is avoiding strength training really the safest choice?

These are concerns I hear regularly in my coaching.

I work with several clients who have limited knee mobility, including a couple who are currently receiving physical therapy. I build their strength training around what they’re working on with their physical therapist, using appropriate exercises and gradual progression to help them get stronger and move with greater control.

But something I’ve learned is that we’re not just building strength and improving mobility. We’re also building confidence.

When you’ve experienced joint discomfort, it’s understandable to become hesitant about certain movements. You start questioning what your body can handle, and sometimes avoiding those movements feels like the safest option.

But avoiding movement isn’t always the best long-term solution.

In this week’s podcast, I explain how smart resistance training can support joint health, what research tells us about exercise and osteoarthritis, and why getting stronger doesn’t always mean lifting heavier weights. I also talk about recognizing the difference between normal training effort and warning signs that deserve attention.

The goal isn’t to push through pain or ignore your limitations. It’s to train intelligently, build confidence, and stay capable of doing the things you enjoy.

  • The Ultra-Processed Food Reckoning

Are ultra-processed foods really as bad as we’re being told? And should a long ingredient list automatically raise concerns?

In this episode, I take a closer look at the research on ultra-processed foods, including their relationship with overeating, weight gain, inflammation, and metabolic health. We also discuss why certain food additives deserve attention, why not all processed foods are nutritionally equal, and what to look for when reading ingredient labels.

My goal isn’t to make you afraid of packaged foods. It’s to help you understand what you’re eating and make better nutrition choices that fit your everyday life.

  • Can You Build Muscle and Lose Fat After 50?

Can you build muscle and lose fat after 50 at the same time? Yes, but the timeline matters more than most people realize.

In this episode of the Four Pillar Fitness Insights Podcast, I break down what realistic progress can look like after 50, including when strength gains may show up, how long noticeable muscle growth can take, and why fat loss and hypertrophy don’t always happen at the same pace.

We also talk about body recomposition, muscle memory, protein, calorie intake, alcohol, recovery, and why one smart-scale reading shouldn’t determine whether you think your plan is working.

The goal isn’t to lower your expectations. It’s to understand the process well enough to stay consistent long enough to see what your body can actually do.

  • Why Your Fitness Goals Should Change as You Age

The way you train at 25 probably shouldn’t be exactly the way you train at 45 or 70.

Not because getting older means lowering your standards, but because the job of fitness changes.

In this episode, I break down Build, Maintain, Defend, a framework from my book The Four Pillars of Fitness.

    The idea is simple:

Build physical capacity when you can.Maintain what you’ve earned when life gets demanding.Defend the strength, muscle, mobility, balance, and independence that keep you capable as you age.

These aren’t rigid age categories. A 50-year-old can still build muscle. A 70-year-old can still get stronger. A younger adult dealing with injury, poor sleep, or heavy stress may temporarily need more of a Defend mindset.

    The key distinction is this:

Age influences the stage. Life circumstances influence the season.

In the episode, I also connect the framework back to Strength, Mobility, Nutrition, and Recovery, and explain how to think about what your fitness needs from you right now.

  • Menopause Needs Muscle: Why Strength Training Should Take Priority Now

Perimenopause and menopause can change how women respond to training, recovery, and nutrition. That can be frustrating, especially when the same routine that worked years ago no longer seems to fit.

In this episode, I break down why strength training should take a bigger role during this stage of life, along with the importance of protein, recovery, bone health, and realistic body-composition expectations.

I also share what I see coaching women who are currently going through perimenopause and menopause, and why the goal is not to train less cautiously, but to train more intentionally.

This is not a hormone-treatment discussion. It is a practical coaching conversation about the parts of the plan you can still influence.

  • Creatine After 45: What the New Research Actually Says

Creatine is one of the few supplements I routinely recommend to my clients, but that doesn’t mean the latest claims should be taken at face value.

New 2026 research involving adults ages 45 to 65 is getting attention because it suggests creatine may support lean mass, strength, muscular endurance, and some areas of cognition, including possible benefits even without structured exercise.

In this episode, I break down what the study actually found, what remains exploratory, and why creatine still works best as part of a bigger plan built around resistance training, nutrition, recovery, and consistency.

  • Can You Lose Weight on GLP-1s Without Losing Muscle?

A client recently asked me what I thought about GLP-1s for weight loss.

My first answer was simple: I’m not a medical doctor, and I’m not here to tell anyone whether a GLP-1 medication is right or wrong for them. That’s a conversation between you and your healthcare provider.

But as a strength and nutrition coach, I do care about what happens while the weight is coming down.

Are you preserving muscle? Are you strength training? Are you eating enough protein? Are you still walking and moving through your day? Are you becoming more capable, or just lighter?

That’s the fitness side of the GLP-1 conversation, and that’s what I cover in this episode.

  • Why You’re Not Seeing Results, Part 2: Your Habits Don’t Match Your Goals

You can be working out, trying to eat better, and still feel like your results aren’t matching the effort you’re putting in.

In this episode, I talk about the other side of stalled progress. Sometimes the workout isn’t the biggest issue. Sometimes it’s the habits around it.

I get into realistic fat-loss expectations, training frequency, sweets, alcohol, recovery, and the everyday choices that can quietly work against the goal you say you want.

This isn’t about perfection, and it’s definitely not about judging someone for enjoying dinner out, dessert, or a drink. It’s about being honest about whether your weekly habits actually support the result you’re expecting.

That’s a conversation I have often as a coach. A good plan has to fit real life, but it still has to create enough consistency to work.

If you’re frustrated with slow progress, this episode may help you look at the problem a little differently.

If you want help building a strength and nutrition plan around your actual schedule and habits, that’s the kind of thing I work through with clients through Four Pillar Fitness online coaching at 4PFitness.com.

And if you missed Part 1, that episode covers what happens when the problem is your training itself, not your lifestyle. 🎙️ Listen to Part 1 here.

  • Why You’re Not Seeing Results, Part 1: Your Workouts Aren’t Progressing

You can show up to the gym consistently, put in real effort, and still spend months spinning your wheels.

In this episode, I break down one of the most common reasons I see people stall: their workouts aren’t actually progressing. I share a recent conversation I had in the gym with someone who was using the same familiar weights, counting to 10, and moving on without a real plan for progression.

We’ll talk about what progressive overload really means, how close your working sets should be to failure, why tracking your workouts matters, and how to tell whether your training is giving your body a reason to adapt.

This is also a big part of how I coach. A good program should match your goals, schedule, training history, and ability to recover. If you’re just collecting exercises without a clear progression strategy, working harder may not be the answer. Better structure might be.

And this is only half the story.

In Part 2, I’ll look at the other side of stalled progress: when training frequency, nutrition, alcohol, sweets, and everyday habits don’t match the results you’re expecting.

  • Sleep Like an Athlete: Recovery Habits That Help Training Work Better

Most people focus on the workout itself. But if your recovery is poor, your training may not be working as well as it could.

In this episode of the Four Pillar Fitness Insights Podcast, I talk about why sleep and recovery deserve the same attention as sets, reps, and nutrition.

As a coach, I see people put plenty of effort into training while trying to operate on too little sleep, high stress, inconsistent nutrition, and very little real downtime. Then they wonder why energy is low, soreness hangs around, and progress feels harder than it should.

In this episode, I break down practical recovery habits that can help support better training, including sleep consistency, rest days, stress management, hydration, nutrition, and knowing when your body may need a lighter day instead of another hard session.

Recovery isn’t about doing nothing. It’s part of the training process.

If you want to get stronger, build muscle, and stay capable for the long haul, what happens between workouts matters too.
