    Send us Fan Mail

🤯 Did you know there are 8 ways to write the "é" sound in French? And why do "roi" and "froid" not rhyme with "droit"?

In episode 73, we demystify it all!

YouTube Link for the "Oi" et "è" sounds

✅ The trick to telling the "è" sound and the "oi" sound apart.
✅ The secret list of the 8 spellings for the "é" sound.

An essential episode to perfect your French.

We explore two essential sounds that give French its unique musicality: the "é" and "oi" sounds. These characteristic diphthongs are the key to developing an authentic and natural French accent.

    • The "oi" (wa) sound is a diphthong where the mouth moves from an "o" shape to an "a" shape.
    • Technique for pronouncing "oi": Start with your mouth almost closed (for "o") and then open it into an "a" sound.
    • Common words with "oi": moi, toi, trois, fois, voix, bonsoir, au revoir.
    • The "é" sound can be written in eight different ways in French.
    • The main spellings for the "é" sound are: ai (maison), è (père), ê (fête), ei (reine), and et (poulet).
    • Be careful with the combinations ain/aim, which produce a different, nasal sound.
    • Practical exercises to master these sounds: repeating words, sentences, and simulated conversations.
    • Tips: practice in front of a mirror, record yourself, and listen to native speakers.

Repeat this magic sentence ten times every day to rapidly improve your pronunciation: "Moi, j'ai choisi d'apprendre un français parfait" (I have chosen to learn perfect French).

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Send us Fan Mail

In this episode, Annie and Anastasia dive into the subtle art of expressing disagreement politely in French. They liken it to a strategic game of chess—where every word matters and one wrong move can shift the tone entirely.

    • A three-tiered approach to disagreement: from basic to sophisticated
    • “Soft” expressions like “I don’t quite share that opinion”
    • Nuanced phrases such as “Allow me to offer a different perspective”
    • Elegant expert-level formulations like “While your proposal is appealing…”
    • A three-step structure: acknowledge the idea, introduce your nuance, offer an alternative
    • Real-life dialogue examples in work and everyday settings
    • Why speaking up matters—to avoid frustration and misunderstandings
    • Cultural differences in how disagreement is expressed

If this episode inspired you, subscribe so you never miss one—and share it with a friend, colleague, or loved one learning French. Together, let’s make French feel alive, accessible, and human.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
