How to be Spiritually Healthy

Mindfulness and meditation are popular nowadays as many people recognise the importance of our spiritual health. In Titus, God describes the spiritually healthy as having godliness. It begins within and has a positive impact on all of our lives. Why not make 2023 the year to improve your spiritual health.

Number Your Days

The start of a new year is when many of us re-evaluate our life goals and the way we spend our time. Psalm 90 shows there is value in doing that (e.g. verse 12). However the real value is found in seeing our lives from God's perspective. This sermon explores what the psalm says about God’s eternity, our mortality and God’s mercy.

The Greatest Gift

This famous 'Christmas' passage predicts the greatest gift ever given: God's gift of his own Son. This sermon investigates why we need this gift, what the gift includes, and how to receive it. 

Saul’s Fall

The final chapter in 1 Samuel records the end of King Saul. After a life of unfaithfulness to the Lord, he dies in defeat and humiliation. This sermon looks at the verdict, the tragedy and the extent of Saul’s fall, and the lessons we can draw from it.

Facing Dilemmas

In these chapters we find both David and Saul in a mess of their own making – something we can all relate to. However, they demonstrate that one predicament is far worse than all others, and that God's mercy is always our only hope.

Scripture Alone

One of the foundational convictions of the Reformation was the doctrine of Scripture alone. This is the belief that the Scriptures are the highest and only infallible authority in the life of the Christian and the Church. This sermon considers the importance of this doctrine, by looking at what 2 Timothy 3:14-17 teaches about the nature, purpose and focus of Scripture.

Mercy

How do you respond to being wronged? So far David has been a model of patience and humility. But when Nabal foolishly insults him, he loses it. We will learn the peril of revenge, the practice of mercy, and the Saviour we need to be people of mercy.

Upheld

David continues to live as a fugitive on the run from King Saul. Yet the Lord is the upholder of his life (Ps 54:4). We learn how God upholds his people in times of distress: by the encouragement of his promises, the assurance of his protection and the certainty of his purposes.

The Fugitive King

As God’s anointed king, David could not have anticipated the amount of suffering he would experience on the way to the throne. In this way David foreshadows King Jesus whose path to glory was paved in suffering. This sermon looks at the plight, the people and the protection of the true king.
