The Israelites were a great example, but of what? They indulged in idolatry and immorality and only a couple made it into the promised land. Depressing. But their example was written down for us to know that if we do not heed the warning from their history, we will repeat it too.

The story of Achan reveals God’s perspective on hidden sin within his people. It teaches us how an individual’s sin can impact the whole community, why sin makes God so angry, and what must be done about it.

Some see the Apostle Paul defending his apostleship in this chapter, but his main point is to show how the Christian life is about the gospel. To do that he uses himself as an example of someone who is willing to forego his rights to seek to win people for the gospel.
