  • “Life Is Not A Competition, But I Am Winning”, interview with the director Julia Fuhr Mann

In “Life Is Not A Competition, But I Am Winning” by Julia Fuhr Mann, the issue of gender in competitive sports is deeply analysed, starting from the beginning, the first cases on misgendered sport persons in the history, from the Olympics down to any kind of competitive meeting. “Life Is Not A Competition, But I Am Winning” by Julia Fuhr Mann has been presented in Venice Critics Week section 2023.

    Unbendable rules and misunderstandings

What “Life Is Not A Competition, But I Am Winning” shows is that rules in sports are difficult to modify, and the gender fluidity is still nowadays an issue that shake and worry so much that any decision in that field is restrictive and violent.

Contemporary sport people to learn about the past

The idea is to meet some contemporary trans and gender non conforming athletes to discuss the modern situation compared to the ones in the past, going to visually meet them , in an surreal but effective way, to create a bond between different generations.

  • “Dogman”, interview with the director Luc Besson and the actor Caleb Landry Jones

“Dogman” narrates the secluded and solitary life of an outsider dog lover who has to come to terms with the world, with its violence and its rules. With the fundamental help of Caleb Landry Jones, who chiseled the main character to an incredible perfection, Luc Besson comes back with a blast.

    From a real story

Reading a piece of news about a kid kept locked in a cage, Luc Besson started to think about the consequences of that on the kid and the perpetrators as well. The dogs came later, as the creative process went by.

    No film without Caleb

“Dogman” could have not been as it is without the presence of Caleb Landry Jones. It was clear to Luc Besson and it is clear to us as well. His many layers of emotions and depth, tenderness and strength make the film the gem that it is.

  • “Woman of”, interview with directors Malgorzata Szumowska and Michal Englert

Interview during the 80th edition of Venice International Film Festival with Malgorzata Szumowska and Michal Englert, directors of the film “Woman of” (“Kobieta Z…” in Polish) in competition for the Golden Lion. The movie depicts several decades in the life of a Polish trans woman and her relationship to her family and the rest of society.

Szumowska and Englert talk to FRED about the importance of this film to tell the world how LGTBQ+ rights are not being respected in Poland. They address the process of working with more than an actor for the same role, based on the idea that people’s aspect can change throughout their whole lives.

International reviews have said that “Woman of” is “a sprawling, lyrical, and sensitive journey of a woman becoming her true self”. During the film, the audience will discover the journey of Aniela Wesoły: her conversations with friends, family and doctors describe not only her life… but Poland itself.
