PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Stephen Frears, director of the film The Lost King.
With The Lost King, Stephen Frears reunites with the writers team of Philomena, Jeff Pope and Steve Coogan and brings to the big screen the true story of an amateur historian, Philippa Langley (Sally Hawkins), who in 2012 discovered the remains of King Richard III a carpark in Leicester. At the Rome Film Festival to present the film in the Grand Public section, the director talks about his fascination for female driven stories and the peculiar story of Philippa Langley, whom against all odds, managed to find the remains, also because she trusted her feelings and presentiment beyond archeological theories.
The Lost King: In 2012, having been lost for over 500 years, the remains of King Richard III were discovered beneath a carpark in Leicester. The search had been orchestrated by an amateur historian, Philippa Langley, whose unrelenting research had been met with incomprehension by her friends and family and with scepticism by experts and academics. THE LOST KING is the life-affirming true story of a woman who refused to be ignored and who took on the country’s most eminent historians, forcing them to think again about one of the most controversial kings in England’s history.

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Luis De Filippis, director of the film Something you said last night.
For her debut feature film, Something youi said last night, screening in the feature film competition at the 18th Zurich Film Festival,Luis De Filippis chooses to portray a Canadian-italian family during their holidays. The film doesn’t want to focus on one of its protagonists,Renata (Carmen Madonia), being a transgender woman but instead on the family dynamics with their defects and their positive aspects. While not pointing all her attention on Madonia, still manages to depict all the struggles and fights a transgender woman has to go through nowadays. Something you said last night is a film where silences speak louder than words.
Something you said last night: Italian-Canadian Ren goes on vacation with her parents and younger sister, Siena. Her family doesn’t know that the twenty-something transwoman has recently lost her job. Ren tries to cope with a resort geared towards retirees and her parents’ lovingly arrogant ways, while her sister keeps them all on their toes with her rebellious outbursts. Knowing that Ren will be even more dependent on her parents for support after the holidays, the vacation home feels increasingly like it’s shrinking. Luis de Filippis tells in this refreshingly cliché-free movie of family dynamics and explores a Millennial’s contradictory desire to be independent yet cared for.

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Lukas Dhont, director of the film Close
Lukas Dhont’ second feature Close is an homage to friendship, says the director at the 18th Zurich Film Festival where the film has been presented in the Gala premieres section. The Belgian director reveals how he dedicated the film to the friends he lost while growing up and how he got the idea of his second work thanks to his mom who pushed him to write about what he knows and cares about. Close also shows how friendships can be poisoned, especially during the teenage years, by the constant need of society for labelling and defining gender, relationships, affection, masculinity, femininity and sexual orientation
Close: Ever since they can remember, Léo and Rémi have been inseparable friends. Throughout the summer, the two 13-year-olds roam through fields and meadows, chase each other on their bikes along country roads, and spend the night together. But with the start of the new school year, their intimate friendship is strained – the natural physical closeness of the two boys has not gone unnoticed by their classmates. A fatal event soon turns Léo and Rémi’s lives completely upside down. Belgian director Lukas Dhont tells with extraordinary tenderness the heart-breaking story of a youthful friendship at a crossroads. Dhont, who won the Golden Eye at ZFF 2018 with his debut feature GIRL, was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes this year.

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Edward Berger, director of the film Im Westen nichts Neues / All Quiet on the Western Front.
At the 18th Zurich Film Festival, Edward Berger presents his new film, All Quiet on the Western Front, the first German adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s pacifist world bestseller. The director comments on his approach to the topic of war, his way of portraying it through the eyes of the young boys who had been brainwashed into thinking World War I was going to be fast and victorious and instead, they found death and violence.
Im Westen nichts Neues / All Quiet on the Western Front: Germany, World War I. A romanticised idea of heroism motivates the student Paul Bäumer to volunteer for the army at the age of 19. Full of patriotic zeal, he completes basic training before going to the Western Front with his comrades. In the trenches, however, it’s not long before Paul’s worldview is shattered and he is forced to experience first-hand how initial euphoria turns into fear and despair. With Im Westen nichts Neues, Edward Berger directs the first German film adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s pacifist world bestseller. With a great ensemble cast including Daniel Brühl, Albrecht Schuch and Devid Striesow, the result is a gripping drama that impressively demonstrates the absurdity and brutality of war.
