And Wojtek’s mother, who operates a small grocery store, doesn’t seem to notice his troubles. Maybe it’s because she has enough to worry about trying to feed them both. Or perhaps she has no idea how to help her son. PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Alica Bednáriková, director of the film Liquid Bread.
Can humour and satire be the key in cinema as in life to tackle some difficult topics? In Future Frames Slovak director Alica Bednáriková answers with a film, Liquid Bread which manages to portray three generations in a sarcastic, ironic though serious way. The director also talks about the condition of women in cinema nowadays and the change the industry is hopefully really going through.
Liquid Bread: Three generations of a seemingly ordinary family gather at the family home in southern Slovakia. The arrival of the granddaughter Zoja doesn’t cause any major issues, though perhaps just a little more alcohol is consumed, one more family secret comes out, one minor tragedy occurs … Liquid Bread is a family portrait – and a portrait of a family portrait. Working with a playful curiosity, Slovak director Alica Bednáriková explores the possibilities of the film script, its (self-)reflection, and cinematic narrative as such, thus showing that a classical subject can be approached from a fresh angle and with a sense of humor.

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Bianca Stigter, director of the documentaryThree Minutes a Lengthening.
The first time Bianca Stigter was a guest on FRED, her documentary feature Three Minutes a Lengthening was presented at the Giornate degli Autori in Venice in 2021. After almost a year traveling from film festival to film festival with her film, Stigter is “virtually” in Sydney with the film which is programmed in the Program Strand “Europe! Voices of Women in film” in collaboration with the European Film Promotion. The director tells us about the journey she made with her film and the reactions to Three Minutes a Lengthening that she gathered along the process.
Three Minutes a Lengthening : The small Polish town of Nasielsk was once home to around 3000 Jewish people. Fewer than 100 of them survived the Holocaust. A year prior to their fateful deportation, Jewish-American David Kurtz visited his childhood town, shooting three minutes of amateur holiday footage during his stay. Decades later, Dutch director Bianca Stigter – with the help of narrator Helena Bonham Carter – dives deep into this precious fragment. Through inventive assemblage and intimate reflections, the footage unfurls into a haunting tapestry of mystery and loss demonstrating how the film medium can bear witness. Co-produced by Steve McQueen (12 Years A Slave).
