The film was presented within the program of the International Critics’ Week, the parallel and independent strand of the 77th Venice International Film Festival. In this interview, we talk about the origins of the story, which explores such themes as homelessness and motherhood in an intense and powerful way. They also talk about the strong style of Topside as well as working with its young protagonist Zhaila Farmer. This interview was recorded for the Big FRED Tuesday.

Topside: Deep in the underbelly of New York City, a five-year-old girl and her mother have claimed the abandoned tunnels as their home. After a sudden police-mandated eviction, the pair are forced to flee aboveground into a brutal winter night.

When talking about his debut film, The Predators, screening in the Orizzonti competition at the 77th Venice International Film Festival, Pietro Castellitto (son of actor/director Sergio Castellitto and writer Margaret Mazzantini) states: “Being happy is a tough business. At times, a job for “predators”. Pietro Castellitto explains the reasons why he chose to act in his film and play Federico, the character around which the two families depicted in the story, eventually and metaphorically connect: “In Federico I have catalyzed a feeling of alienation, a sense of enormous frustration that stems from the difference between what you are and what others think you are” says Castellitto.

The Predators: It’s early in the morning, the sea at Ostia is calm. A man knocks at the door of a woman’s house: he is going to sell her a watch. It is early in the morning again when, a few days later, a young assistant professor of philosophy will be left out of the group chosen for the exhumation of Nietzsche’s body. Two grievances. Two apparently incompatible families: the Pavone and the Vismara. Bourgeois and intellectual the former, proletarian and Fascist the second. Opposing factions that share the same jungle: Rome. A banal incident will bring the two poles into collision. And the folly of a twenty-five-year-old man will lead to a showdown that reveals everyone has a secret and no one is what they seem. And that we are all predators.

PODCAST | Angelo Acerbi interviews Ivan Ikic, director of the film Oasis.

Ivan Ikic tells us a story of three young people living in an institution for mentally impaired kids, where they act roles and at the same time tell their own stories. An engaging film, and a complex one to build and shoot, as he tells us in this interview on the occasion of the participation to the Giornate degli Autori section, at the Venice Festival.

Oasis: Upon her arrival at an institution for people with mental disabilities, Maria becomes fast friends with the equally fiery Dragana. When it becomes clear that they are both in love with the more withdrawn Robert, their relationship is upset and gradually grows into a dangerous game of hide-and-seek to win him over. Being condemned to a lifetime of hiding away from society, the three teenagers’ profound longing for independence and human connection takes hold. Driven by the newfound feelings of desire and envy, their impulsive actions topple the delicate balance preserved by the institution’s stifling rules and spill over into confrontation and desperate measures for any way out.
