  • Ana Rocha de Sousa – Listen #Venezia77

PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Ana Rocha de Sousa, director of the film Listen.

A conversation with director Ana Rocha de Sousa, who presented her feature debut Listen in the Orizzonti section of the 77th Venice International Film Festival. In this film, she talks about the difficult and seldom explored theme of forces adoptions, as well as where, particularly because this is a topic seldom explored in cinema, she sought inspiration to structure a story around it. She also discusses how, while the film was conceived before Brexit, the film has now picked up more layers of meaning and more.

Listen: In the outskirts of London, Portuguese couple and parents of three, Bela and Jota, struggle to make ends meet. When a misunderstanding arises at school with their deaf daughter, the British social services grow concerned for the safety of their children. In this interview we talk about this coming of age story, set in Bering Strait, which is located between Chukotka and Alaska and divides Russia from America, and some of its theme, including how sex is one of its driving forces. The Whaler Boy: Leshka lives in an isolated village on the Bering Strait, which is located between Chukotka and Alaska and divides Russia from America. He is a teenager, and like most men in his village, he is a whale hunter who leads a very uneventful life out at the far edge of the world. But the Internet’s recent arrival in Leshka’s village means the predominantly male population now gathers in a shed every evening to watch gorgeous girls thousands of kilometers away dance on the screen of a constantly buffering erotic webcam chat site. For most of the guys, it’s just a bit of fun, but Leshka takes it seriously. He encounters a beautiful girl on the chat site and falls in love with her. Leshka’s first love transforms him beyond recognition: he is now determined to find the camgirl in the real world, where a crazy journey awaits him.

  • Katherine Waterston – The World to Come #Venezia77

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Katherine Waterston, actress of the film The World to Come.

Set in an isolated rural farm in the US of 1851, director Mona Fastvold depicts an intense and delicate loven story between two women in a time and place where deep human connections where almost impossible to happen. This is The World to Come, in competition at the 77th Venice International Film Festival. The film stars Katherine Waterston and Vanessa Kirby who is at the festival with another film in competition, Pieces of a Woman. Katherine Waterston is not only the protagonist of the story but the voice and the feelings of the film, her words guide us into her character’s world and her discovering real love and, quoting the film “astonishment and joy”. The actress describes her work with Mona Fastvold to shape her character and her emotions through body and words.

The World to Come: In upstate New York in the 1850s, Abigail begins a new year on the rural farm where she lives with her husband Dyer. As Abigail considers the year to come through her journal entries, we experience the marked contrast between her deliberate, stoic manner and her unravelling complex emotions. Spring arrives and Abigail meets Tallie, an emotionally frank and arrestingly beautiful newcomer renting a neighbouring farm with her husband, Finney. The two strike up a tentative relationship, filling a void in their lives which neither knew existed. We follow the progress of the two women’s increased intimacy and passionate devotion to one another, even as they begin to register that they have no model for this new state in which they find themselves. As both husbands come to terms with the intensity of their wives’ connection—Dyer’s wounded feelings and Finney’s jealous vindictiveness—events climax with Finney’s decision to move Tallie away, and Abigail’s determination to pursue her lost kindred spirit.

  • Kornél Mundruczo’ – Pieces of a Woman #Venezia77

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Kornél Mundruczo’, director of the film Pieces of a Woman.

After White God and Jupiter’s Moon, Hungarian director Kornél Mundruczo’ chooses a personal story for his english language debut film Pieces of a Woman, screening in competition at the 77th Venice International Film Festival. With his wife and scriptwriter Kàta Weber, Mundruczo’ takes on screen the tragedy of losing a newborn child combining his personal experience with Kata Weber with the stories of so many women and couples trying to survive the painful tragedy of miscarriage or infant death. Vanessa Kirby and Shia LeBeouf are the protagonists facing this hard journey that focuses on a woman’s fight to grieve her own way.

Pieces of a Woman: Martha and Sean Carson are a Boston couple on the verge of parenthood whose lives change irrevocably during a home birth at the hands of a flustered midwife, who faces charges of criminal negligence. Thus begins a year-long odyssey for Martha, who must navigate her grief while working through fractious relationships with her husband and her domineering mother, along with the publicly vilified midwife whom she must face in court. Pieces of a Woman is a deeply personal, searing domestic aria in exquisite shades of grey and an ultimately transcendent story of a woman learning to live alongside her loss.

  • Káta Weber – Pieces of a Woman #Venezia77

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Káta Weber, scriptwriter of the film Pieces of a Woman.

“This film is a warning: if inequality is not addressed by civic means, and if all dissenting voices are silenced, chaos ensues”. Mexican director Michel Franco explains in these few sentences the whole meaning of his new dystopian thriller Nuevo Orden, in competition at the 77th Venice Film Festival. According to Franco, the film is set in a possible future as nobody is safe and ambiguity is key. Nuevo Orden is not a J’accuse against military groups and/or the elite but instead we are equally part of sick mechanism where there’s no sense of community. The film, says Franco, doesn’t want to send a message but to act as a warning.
