PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Illum Jacobi, director of the film The Trouble With Nature.
An interview with filmmaker Illum Jacobi, who talks with us about his latest film, The Trouble With Nature, presented in the Bright Future strand of the 2020 International Film Festival Rotterdam. The film is loosely based on the life of Edmund Burke, one of the architects of the capitalist system, and is especially inspired by his writings on the sublime. In our chat, Jacobi gives us his own definition of the sublime and talks about the relationship people have with nature today. He also tells us whether he sought to make his film a critique of the capitalist system, the importance of sense of humor in the movie, the challenges and upsides of shooting most of The Trouble With Nature outdoors and much more.
The Trouble With Nature: Rampant debt and a significant midlife crisis send philosopher Edmund Burke (Antony Langdon) fleeing from London to embark on an expedition through the French Alps. He brings along a servant on loan from his brother’s plantation in the West Indies, a young indigenous woman named Awak (Nathalia Acevedo from Post Tenebras Lux). Together they set out to discover the sublime in this 18th-century road movie. Ill-equipped for the outdoor life, Burke whinges the days away while Awak carries all their supplies and makes sure his face is perpetually powdered.

PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Diyar Hesso, producer of the film The End Will Be Spectacular.
An interview with Diyar Hesso, producer of The End Will Be Spectacular, presented as part of the Perspectives strand of the 2020 International Film Festival Rotterdam. Hesso is also the co-founder of the Rojava Film Commune, the Kurdish film commune credited as makers of this film. He tells us about why and how this Commune was set up, and how it not only produces Kurdish films from a Kurdish point of view but also how it promotes and is involved with several aspects of the proliferation of film culture in the region. The End Will Be Spectacular is a feature film that tells the story of the siege of Sur, based on the experiences of many of the people involved with the making of the film and appearing in it – A fascinating and compelling story told via the words of Hesso.
The End Will Be Spectacular: Between 2012 and 2019, the Kurds set up a ‘stateless democracy’ in Rojava, northern Syria, based on local self-governance, gender equality and a communal economy. The Rojava Film Commune was established in 2015, in the middle of the Syrian civil war, to make films based on that region’s reality. The End Will Be Spectacular is an uncompromising war film about resistance fighters who are attempting in 2015 to break the Turkish siege of Sur, the historic heart of the Turkish-Kurdish city of Diyarbakir. The hundred-day battle claims many victims and Sur is almost entirely destroyed. Some of the survivors play lead roles in this film by Ersin Çelik, a member of the Rojava Film Commune.

PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Deniz Tortum, director of the film Phases of Matter.
An interview with Deniz Tortum, who presented his feature documentary debut Phases of Matter in the Bright Future strand of the 2020 International Film Festival Rotterdam. The film is set in a hospital, filmed when plans for its complete demolition seemed to be set in motion. But it is also a location that has a personal connection with Tortum – he was born there and his father is a doctor there. In this film, he talks in more detail about his desire to film in this particular location, the way in which it humanises the representation of patients and doctors on film, the similarities between filmmakers and doctors, and more.
Phases of Matter: The professor strides resolutely through the old Istanbul University Cerrahpasa Hospital. She stops next to a patient. Having professionally exchanged some medical data, she interestedly asks the elderly woman on the bed what book she is reading. The professor picks it up and reads a love poem aloud – an unexpected contrast in Deniz Tortum’s depiction of the parallel world of doctors and other workers in the hospital where he was born and where his father is a doctor.

PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews An Tran, director of the film Moving Pictures: Filmmakers and the Art of Cinematography.
An interview with An Tran, director of Moving Pictures: Filmmakers and the Art of Cinematography, presented in the Deep Focus strand of the 2020 International Film Festival Rotterdam. The film was producer by ARRI to mark their 100th anniversary, and features many notable cinematic artists from different generations and of varied cultural and formative backgrounds. An Tran tells us about the project, as well as her own awakening to the art of cinematography.
Moving Pictures: Filmmakers and the Art of Cinematography: As a relatively young art form, film is constantly undergoing change. Decades ago, film cameras were unwieldy monsters on a tripod or rails. Now, a whole array of variants and aids have sprung up: from Steadicams and crane shots to incredibly light handheld cameras. The digital revolution also had a radical impact. And then again, not so much: the collaboration between director of photography and director is still as close as ever, professional traditions and jargon remain, and old masters such as Rembrandt still inspire many film professionals.

PODCAST | Samantha Sartori interviews Pierfrancesco Favino, actor of the film The Traitor.
We met Pierfrancesco Favino at the 57th New York Film Festival. Marco Bellocchio – whose debut film Fists in the Pocket premiered at the 3rd New York Film Festival (1965) – and star Pierfrancesco Favino brought their unconventional mob drama The Traitor to the festival. Italy’s Oscar entry will open on January 31st 2020 at Film at Lincoln Center, New York.
The Traitor: Pierfrancesco Favino commands the screen throughout this decades-spanning true-life narrative as Tommaso Buscetta, the mafia boss turned informant who helped take down a large swath of organised crime leaders in Sicily in the eighties. In one fully realised, impressively staged scene after another, including the notorious Maxi Trial, overseen by Judge Giovanni Falcone (Fausto Russo Alesi), Bellocchio interrogates received ideas about loyalty that so many other movies of this genre use to romanticise their characters. This is a very different kind of mafia drama, one that has the structure of a procedural but coasts on the waves of psychological portraiture. A Sony Pictures Classics release.

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Matthieu Darras, director of First Cut Lab.
Matthieu Darras founded First Cut Lab to help filmmakers and producers in one of the most difficult steps in the making of their films: the editing process. As a result of this lab’s success, First Cut+ is born, a follow-up on this help chain, regarding this time, the promotion and communication part, including the festival strategy. 8 films will be participating to First Cut+ whose Head is Ilaria Gomarasca, former Festival Manager at Pyramide International and three industry awards will be given: Orka Film Award, Sub-Ti and Sub-Ti Access award and Connecting the Dots award.
First Cut+ is a new program created for boosting the competitiveness and marketability of feature films that previously participated in First Cut Lab. The program will be launched in 2020 through a close cooperation with two dynamic & well-established film industry platforms: Trieste’s When East Meets West and Karlovy Vary IFF’s Eastern Promises Industry Days. Films developed through partner programs MIDPOINT Feature Launch and LIM – Less is More are also eligible to participate. First Cut+ is the only new action that received financial support from the Access to Markets scheme of Creative Europe’s MEDIA program this year. First Cut+ consists in the promotion of a portfolio of 16 fiction feature films at the stage of post-production, predominantly from countries with a low production capacity (at least 75% of the films) and with a focus on Central & Eastern Europe. The range of films will be large: from both debut & experienced directors, small and larger budgets. 8 films – half of the portfolio – are promoted during the winter session at Trieste’s When East Meets West (January 2020), and another half during the summer session, at Karlovy Vary IFF’s Eastern Promises Industry Days (early July 2020), enabling to welcome most eligible projects, no matter the timeline of their production. Participating projects will have 3 days of consultations on promotion followed by a Works-in-progress session.
