  • Juan Cabral – Two/One #IFFAM2019

PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Juan Cabral, director of the film Two/One.

A conversation with filmmaker Juan Cabral, director of Two/One, featured in the International Competition of the 2019 International Film Festival and Awards Macao. Cabral shares his thoughts about some of the themes of the movie, including loneliness, connection. Given these heavy themes, we ask him whether he has an interest in philosophy. He also talks about the experience of working on his first feature and since this is the second interview FRED does with the film, following its premiere earlier this year at the Tribeca Film Festival, we ask him what life after it has been.

Two/One: Kaden is a world-class ski jumper in Whistler, Canada, unexpectedly presented with the chance of reconnecting with his teenage sweetheart. Khai is a corporate executive in Shanghai, China, faced with the fact that the girl he fantasises about on the internet has just started working in his office. The two men go about their lives, without knowing that they are connected. When one sleeps, the other is awake. They dream each other. They are, in some strange way, the same person. They should never meet, but they are destined to do so.

  • Bob Byington – Frances Ferguson #TFF37

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Bob Byington, director of the film Frances Ferguson.

It is a non judgmental tale about a teacher, making very bad choices because of how unhappy she is with her life: Frances Ferguson by Bob Byington is at the 37th Torino Film Festival in the Festa Mobile section. The director comments on the choice of a female protagonist, played by Kaley Wheless and the idea of having his friend Nick Offerman as the narrator of the events, a voice-over interrupting, intervening, anticipating the happenings in the story.

Frances Ferguson: Frances is substitute teacher with a dead marriage and she is bored and discontent. One day at school, she meets a student and she starts an affair with him, which of course she gets nabbed for. She pays the price: an arrest, a trial, incarceration. And then a new identity, one that’s not terribly comfortable. Based on actual events.

PODCAST | Angelo Acerbi interviews Bruce McDonald, director of the film Dreamland.

Bruce McDonald knows his last film Dreamland is weird and with a strange narrative pace, not always narratively clear but fascinating. Dreamland: After getting slighted by a legendary jazz trumpet player, sadistic gang boss Hercules puts his number one enforcer, Johnny Deadeyes, on a mission of revenge. His instructions are simple: cut off the trumpet player’s pinkie finger before he plays a wedding reception.
