PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Hailey Gates, director of the film Shako Mako.
FRED interviews Hailey Gates, who directed Shako Mako, one of the short films of the MIU MIU Women’s Tales initiative presented in the Giornate degli Autori section of the 2019 Venice International Film Festival. The director talks about the experience of working on this project, which also marks her first fiction film directorial effort.
Shako Mako: Farah, a bread seller, walks the streets of a Middle Eastern town, while an American military vehicle, surrounded by soldiers, slowly passes by. A moment’s silence. Then, a devastating explosion. Civilians are bloodied, wounded. The horrors of war. “Farah” looks around aghast and wailing. But nothing here is quite what it seems. In fact, “Farah” is a character played by an aspiring actress called Laila. And this isn’t Iraq, but a replica village erected on the Fort Irwin army base in California, used to train American troops before being sent abroad. Laila believes her acting talents are being wasted away in this arid simulation, where female role-players are limited to mute, background roles. She takes things much more seriously. Laila plots her way out.

PODCAST | Angelo Acerbi interviews Graeme Scott and Buddy Squires, directors of the film Beyond The Beach – The Hell and The Hope.
Graeme Scott and Buffy Squires worked beside the men and women of Emergency for five years to give us this astounding and shocking report of the war zones and the humanitarian crisis in our planet, where Emergency is operating. Gino Strada came at the end of the project to be interviewed and his voice and his words are the most efficient frame which the daily nightmares of these populations and those who help them are told into.
Beyond The Beach – The Hell and The Hope: gives a glimpse into the lives of doctors, nurses and volunteers who have given up their everyday lives to work in war-torn parts of the world for the Italian NGO Emergency. Created in 1994 by war surgeon Gino Strada, Emergency staff have helped save over 9 million lives around the world. From treating frontline injuries caused by explosions in Kabul, to the monotony of Refugee Camps in Iraq as well as their deployment on the MOAS rescue boats off the coast of Libya, the staff explain how they could not simply stay at home and do nothing knowing they could ‘do something’. We see their laughter, tears and, at times, frustration doing what very few people are brave enough to do and we learn the hardships and emotional stress that they must endure to carry out their missions while never losing hope…
