  • Maika Monroe – Hot Summer Nights #RomaFF13

PODCAST| Chiara Nicoletti interviews Maika Monroe, actress of the film Hot Summer Nights.

She is a professional kite surfer and became famous thanks to the indie horror film It Follows which was presented in Cannes and then sold to many countries outside the US. Maika Monroe is in Rome as the absolute teen idol of this year’s edition where she presents Hot Summer Nights, the film Timothee Chalamet shot right before the Oscar hit Call Me by Your Name by Italian director Luca Guadagnino. Maika describes her character McKayla, how she acts tough to hide how much she has suffered in the past. McKayla is a mix between a hot Lolita and a confused adolescent. Maika Monroe explains how she takes seriously the bad or good influence she might have on her fans and followers, those young adults Alice nella Città talks to.

Hot Summer Nights: Daniel Middleton (Timothée Chalamet), a likable but socially awkward recent high-school graduate, is spending the summer before college visiting his aunt on Cape Cod. Neither a “townie” nor a wealthy “summer bird” dropping in for the season, Daniel struggles to find his place—until he meets Hunter Strawberry (Alex Roe), the local bad-boy who peddles marijuana to well-off vacationers when he isn’t protecting his younger sister McKayla (Maika Monroe) from overzealous male suitors. Sensing anopportunity, Daniel persuades Hunter to go into business, dealing weed up and down the Cape together as the summer heat intensifies. Newly confident, Daniel falls for McKayla, keeping their relationship secret until it becomes explosive. Set in the summer of 1991 against the backdrop of a looming hurricane, Hot Summer Nights is the confident and assured debut feature from writer-director Elijah Bynum. Featuring a wry and charming performance by Chalamet, a stellar turn by Monroe (It Follows), and a breakout performance by Roe, Hot Summer Nights is a torrid thriller about small-town misdeeds that erupt in passion and violence.

  • Morgan Bushe – The Belly of the Whale #RomaFF13

PODCAST| Angelo Acerbi interviews Morgan Bushe, director of the film The Belly of the Whale.

Morgan Bushe had a great time doing this film and we can tell it from the passion he talks about it. Being a slapstick comedy with a dark side, with a small budget, it has been a challenge every day but the crew made its best to have a perfectly working comic machine. We wonder in our talk with Morgan how come Ireland has a solid tradition of black comedies, and why every comedy they make has a dark side to it that pops out, at some point. We are not sure to have found the reason for it, though.

The Belly of the Whale: After breaking free from his foster family, Joey Moody returns penniless to Laytown, a rural Irish town just over the horizon, in a bid to reclaim his family’s caravan park and find his best friend and drinking partner, Lanks. Meanwhile, on a mission to find the money to pay for his sick wife’s medication, Ronald Tanner, risks his meager life savings on a get rich quick scheme that ends in abject failure. When Joey accidentally burns down Ronald’s camper van, the odd pair find themselves bonded together in misfortune. In a desperate attempt to solve their problems they concoct a slapdash plan to rob the local amusement arcad.

  • Frederick Wiseman – Monrovia, Indiana #NYFF

PODCAST| Samantha Sartori interviews Frederick Wiseman, director of the film Monrovia, Indiana.

At the 56th New York Film Festival we met Frederick Wiseman and he revealed to us how he works to make his movies. The time he dedicated to editing, starting with the selection of candidate sequences among 120 hours of shooting. Every new film from Frederick Wiseman, now 88 years old, seems more vigorous and acute than the last. His subject here is Monrovia, Indiana; population 1063, as of 2017; located deep in the American heartland. Wiseman alights on key activities: talk among friends over coffee at the diner, packaging meat at the supermarket, trucks loading with corn, expansion debates at town planning commission meetings, and, most intriguingly, a funeral. Monrovia, Indiana is a tough, piercing look at the rhythm and texture of life as it is lived in a wide swathe of this country. A Zipporah Films release. Monrovia, Indiana will open in the US October 26th 2018.

Monrovia, Indiana explores a small town in rural, mid-America and illustrates how values like community service, duty, spiritual life, generosity and authenticity are formed, experienced and lived along with conflicting stereotypes. The film gives a complex and nuanced view of daily life in Monrovia and provides some understanding of a way of life whose influence and force have not always been recognized or understood in the big cities on the east and west coasts of America and in other countries.

  • Tom Surgal – Fire Music #NYFF

PODCAST| Samantha Sartori interviews Tom Surgal, director of the film Fire Music.

At the world premiere of Fire Music at the 56th New York Film Festival, we meet the director Tom Surgal. We talked about his collaboration with John Northrup and Lin Culbertson in the creation of this film about the most innovative moment in music history. Writer/Director Tom Surgal is known for directing a series of groundbreaking music videos for leading alternative bands like Sonic Youth, Pavement and the Blues Explosion. Tom was a teenage protégé of Brian DePalma and has worked in a wide range of film production jobs, including production design, casting and writing. Tom is also a musician who performs regularly with Nels Cline (Wilco), Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Jim O’Rourke and Mike Watt (Minutemen, The Stooges) and is co-leader of the improvisational ensemble White Out. He is also a curator who has programmed celebrated music series at various downtown New York venues, including an entire month of shows at John Zorn’s hallowed performance space The Stone. Tom is recognized as a leading authority on Avant-Garde Jazz and boasts one the world’s largest collections of Free Jazz recordings.

Fire Music: Tom Surgal’s film looks at the astonishing sounds (and sights) of that combustible and wildly diverse moment in music known as free jazz, which more or less began with Ornette Coleman, whose tone clusters and abandonment of strict rhythms opened the floor from under modern jazz. Surgal pays close attention to the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Albert Ayler, Eric Dolphy, Sam Rivers, Sun Ra & His Arkestra, and, of course, the recently deceased piano genius Cecil Taylor. Filled with priceless archival footage and photographs, Fire Music is a fittingly wild and freeform tribute to music that makes your hair stand on end.

  • James Gardner – Jellyfish #RomaFF13

PODCAST| Nicolò Comotti interviews James Gardner, director of the film Jellyfish.

James Gardner tells us the reasons and inspirations that led to the making of his first feature Jellyfish. Jellyfish stars the young and talented Liv Hill as Sarah Taylor, a young carer that finds the cure against her grotesquely tough life in stand-up comedy.

Jellyfish: Fifteen-year-old Sarah Taylor exists in the eye of the storm. The sole caretaker of her family, including precocious twin siblings and a manic-depressive mother who spends most of her time in bed, Sarah runs from school to home to work each and every day. Yet, despite her Herculean efforts to put food on the table and keep the electricity on, she is still forced to engage with more dehumanizing ways to make a few extra bucks-so it’s no wonder that her back is up among her peers at school. Jellyfish tells the story of Sarah’s discovery of an unexpected outlet for her frustration and quick-tempered wit: stand-up comedy. First-time feature film director James Gardner paints a dark and hard-edged picture of life in this grey seaside British town, and, in newcomer Liv Hill, he uncovers a revelatory talent. Thanks to her fiercely evocative and vulnerable depiction of Sarah, Hill gives the audience truly remarkable insight into a young woman living a life far beyond her years.
