PODCAST | Angelo Acerbi interviews filmmaker Gus Van Sant, who talks about the exhibition dedicated to him hosted at the National Museum of Cinema in Turin.
The fall brings new events to town, and among them the exhibition dedicated to Gus Van Sant, housed by the National Museum of Cinema at Mole Antonelliana from October 6th, 2016 to January 9th, 2017.
We met with the director Gus Van Sant himself in Torino, to talk about the exhibition. We had a nice chat about his art, that went beyond filmaking; his approach and use of photography as an alternative expressing tool, but not only; and his thoughts on the necessity and meaning of films on lgbt issues, in our times.
(…and he’s a fan of the TV show Transparent.)

PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews filmmaker Krzysztof Zanussi, who introduced the 1928 film Pan Tadeusz at the 35th Pordenone Silent Film Festival.
Filmmaker Krzystof Zanussi attended the Pordenone Silent Film Festival (Giornate del Cinema Muto) for the first time this year. Which is hard to believe considering his passion for film, as our conversation with him shows.
Zanussi reveals his excitement at being at the festival and visiting Pordenone, a city with which he has personal ties. He is here also for a special reason: to give an introduction to Pan Tadeusz, a 1928 film by Ryszard Ordynski, which to this day is one of the only surviving films from the Polish silent era. When we ask him about the reason behind the scarce quantity of Polish film from the early cinema, he points out that films were not only the only things that Poland lost during the second world war.
In this interview, we also try to understand what Polish cinema was like in those days, the influence that it had in the cinema that was to follow from Poland, and even specifically talk about Pan Tadeusz, which he indtroduces as a very Polish film. Zanussi’s fascinting theories on cinema, not only in its silent form, broaden the scope of this interview, as we ponder on such things as what changes the introduction of sound brought to the cinematic language.

The interview was conducted near the end of the festival, a good time to round up an overview of this year’s edition and give an idea of what filmd were selected for its program. But in more general term, as an introduction of the festival on our “online airwaves,” it is quite simply an introduction to examine the challenges encountered in setting up such an event and the way in which the city of Cork in Ireland responds to the festival in general.
Peter also programs a small cinema in Cork, and organizes a number of screenings called the Deja View Screenings, so we also briefly talk about them, and the need to promote alternative cinem a in a place where it is difficult to watch films that fall outside of the mainstream circuit.

PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Jon Nguyen, Olivia Neergaard-Holm, co-directors of the documentary David Lynch: The Art Life from Venezia 73.
David Lynch is certainly one of the most influential filmmakers of the modern era, and his work is regularly celebrated by other directors, artists and critics alike. The latest filmic study of Lynch is a documentary which looks at the man and the artist, with a personal tone, and focuses particularly on the time before he made his first feature film, Eraserhead, in 1977.
Jon Nguyen and Olivia Neergaard-Holm directed the film, alongside Rick Barnes, and we catch up with them at the 73rd Venice Film Festival, where David Lynch: The Art Life was presented in the Venice Classics section. Interesting to note the different approaches the two, in particular, brought to the screen. Nguyen had worked on two previous documentaries on Lynch before this one, and is on friendly and close terms with the filmmaker. On the other hand, Neergard-Hold had no such personal connection to Lynch, and relied upon the footage to establish that connection and select the material that then made up the final work; a final work, which as she says, she hopes will be for both fans of David Lynch and for those who are not.
DAVID LYNCH: THE ART LIFE. David Lynch takes us on an intimate journey through the formative years of his life. From his idyllic upbringing in small town America to the dark streets of Philadelphia, we follow Lynch as he traces the events that have helped to shape one of cinema’s most enigmatic directors.
David Lynch: The Art Life infuses Lynch’s own art, music and early films, shining a light into the dark corners of his unique world, giving audiences a better understanding of the man and the artist. As Lynch states “I think every time you do something, like a painting or whatever, you go with ideas and sometimes the past can conjure those ideas and color them, even if they’re new ideas, the past colors them.” We’re invited in and given a private view from Lynch’s compound and painting studio in the hills high above Hollywood, as Lynch retells personal stories from his past that unfold like scenes from his films. Strange characters come into focus, only to fade again into the past, leaving an indelible mark on Lynch, the artist.
We become witnesses to the fears, misunderstandings and struggles that Lynch overcomes and, along the way, meet the various people that have helped to mold him. It becomes evident early on in Lynch’s life that he views the world differently, absorbing its shadows and weaving a dream like tapestry for audiences worldwide to become tangled in. By pulling back the curtains on the icon we hope to uncover the individual, David Lynch.
