Han Jun-hee – Director – Coin Locker Girl.
FRED’s Matt Micucci interviews Han Jun-hee, whose feature directorial debut “Coin Locker Girl” was featured in the programme of the Semaine de la Critique at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
He talks with us about the influence the film noir genre has on his film. He also talks with us about his choice of having the female characters in this particular film as female, and the different types of sensibilities this particular choice can bring to a project.
Han Jun-hee also talks about the themes that he deals with in this film, such as the theme of family and “being useful” and reveals to us what it feels like to have his feature directorial debut screening in Cannes.
COIN LOCKER GIRL: As a just-born-baby, ‘Il-young’ gets abandoned in the coin-locker #10 of a subway station. Eight years later, she is sold off to the godmother of a Chinatown ring known as ‘Mom’, and becomes a member of her family.
Only the useful ones can survive in this family of Chinatown. Coin Locker Girl is a story of two women who have found their own ways to survive in a cruel, harsh world.

Marcia Tambutti Allende – Director – Allende Mi Abuelo Allende.
FRED’s Matt Micucci interviews Marcia Tambutti Allende, granddaughter of Salvador Allende and director of the documentary “Allende Mi Abuelo Allende“, presented at the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs at the 68th Cannes Film Festival.
A personal journey of discovery of her grandfather, Salvador Allende, the great Chilean political leader who became the first Marxist president of a Latin American country. Marcia tells us about her personal journey, and discusses with us her struggles in getting her family members to open up to her and tell her about him.
She also talks about how she shaped her production, and how long it took for her to gather together all the material she needed to make “Allende Mi Abuelo Allende“, as well as whether of not she felt the responsibility of not only making her first documentary about such an important figure in political history, but also the responsibility of revealing a secret and intimate side of her own family’s story to the wider public – not least of all through its premiere in Cannes.
ALLENDE MI ABUELO ALLENDE (BEYOND MY GRANDFATHER ALLENDE): Marcia wishes to change the family costume of not speaking about their tragic past. 35 years after the coup d’État that overthrew her grandfather, Salvador Allende, the first democratically elected socialist president, she believes that it’s time to recover the family memories and images of their daily life, snatched away during the coup. An intimate past unknown to her, buried under Allende’s political transcendence, exile and family pain. Using a warm yet sharp view, Marcia tries to decipher silence sustained during decades. An honest family portrait without grandiloquence that addresses the complexities of irreparable losses and the role of memory in three generations of a wounded family.

Gabriel Clarke and John Mckenna – Directors – Steve McQueen the man and le mans
FRED’s Matt Micucci interviews Gabriel Clarke and John McKenna, who presented their documentary “Steve McQueen: The Man and Le Mans” in the Cannes Classics section of the 68th Cannes Film Festival.
McKenna and Clarke talk with us about how they first realized that the 1971 production of the film “Le Mans” was such an intense production that marked the life of Hollywood icon Steve McQueen.
They also talk with us about how they were able top discover primary source material, some of which is seen and heard for the first time ever, and their aim in revealing and insightful look at the man Steve McQueen, rather than just the actor.
STEVE MCQUEEN: THE MAN AND LE MANS: ‘If we are going to do this, we are going to do it right. No bullshit, no clever twists. It has to be pure and about one race – Le Mans.’
By 1970, Steve McQueen ruled Hollywood. Hot off the back of classics like ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’ and ‘Bullitt’ he could do no wrong. Now the aspiring mogul and racing fanatic could do the movie that was his life’s passion. The making of the film changed his life forever.
Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans interweaves stunning newly discovered footage and voice recordings with original interviews. It is the true story of how a cinema legend would risk almost everything in pursuit of his dream.
Obsession. Betrayal. Vindication. ‘You must carry your film all the way through to the end. You can’t give up and you can’t let a thing go.’ Steve McQueen
